Last year in October, James Gunn took over as the co-CEO of DC Studios along with Peter Safran. Fans had high hopes for The Suicide Squad director taking the lead for the DCU and were eager for his plans for the cinematic universe until Henry Cavill announced his DC departure. Fans who were expecting to see the actor back as Superman in a sequel to his 2013 film, Man of Steel, were shocked to learn that Gunn does not plan to continue with Cavill anymore.
The departure news was followed by the co-CEOs plans to reboot the universe and introduce new actors and characters under the newly minted DCU. As Gunn revealed his future plans, the fandom has been divided into two groups, and the Russo Brothers seem to have to picked their side in a recent interview.
Russo Brothers Believe in James Gunn’s DCU Plan
After taking over as the co-CEO, James Gunn announced his plans to reboot the DCU and introduce a new Superman and other DC characters on screen. In January 2023, he announced the initial projects under the first chapter of his new DCU, Gods & Monsters, which also included a Superman and a Batman project.
While some fans are excited about the new DCU, others are constantly demanding the studio to restore Snyderverse. They have also claimed that no actor can portray the Kryptonian superhero as great as Henry Cavill. However, despite the massive backlash, DC has started shortlisting the actors for James Gunn’s upcoming movie, Superman: Legacy.
During their recent interview with Comicbook, the Russo brothers addressed the possibility of working with DC Studios. And they also supported the Peacemaker director’s vision for the future of the DCU. “Obviously, James over there running it, it would be a no-brainer,” Joe Russo said.
The directors further said that they believe the direction he’s “going to take that world in” and said that Gunn is going to be “inventive” with the DC universe. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo also talked about their favorite DC character and the DC superhero they would like to work with.
First DCU Project’s Release Date Window Confirmed
James Gunn announced ten projects under the first chapter of his new DCU, including TV series and movies. And the first project to premiere under the new DCU is expected to be the only animated series under the slate, Creature Commandos.
The director has already completed its script and has recently shared the release window for the series. Answering a fan’s query on Twitter, the director shared that Creature Commandos will premiere on Max in 2024.

While the official release date is not revealed yet, the animated series will officially kick start Gunn’s DCU, followed by the release of the Aquaman sequel. Another DCU project with a confirmed release date is Superman: Legacy, which will be directed by the co-CEO himself and is set to release on July 11, 2025.
