Insomniac Didn’t Want Venom to be ‘Too Scary’ in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

We are now 3 weeks away from the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the highly anticipated PS5 sequel to Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game that was released back in 2018 on PS4. As we get closer to the release, more information from behind the scenes is starting to drop on how the fan-favorite title has come together and how the developer’s vision has created a fresh take on some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes and villains.

Previous trailers have focused more on Kraven the Hunter than other villains in the game, but from some recent interviews with Jacinda Chew, Venom has started to take the limelight, hyping up fans just in time for release.

Not too “Comical” and Not too “Scary”: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has the Perfect-looking Venom

Insomniac has nailed the 'strong' look for Venom in Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Insomniac has nailed the ‘strong’ look for Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

For those that aren’t aware, Venom is possibly the most iconic and toughest villain from the Spider-Man universe due to his insane and brutal strength. He is an alien symbiote with a liquid-like form who has to bond with a host to survive, which in most cases is usually a human who then receives enhanced strength and powers.

Considering his form is a massive, hulking alien that takes human hosts and has a reputation for eating its enemies, you would expect a pretty scary-looking form. This is where Jacinda Chew, the Senior Art Director at Insomniac, comes in to make sure the designs don’t go too far.

When you’re making a creature that can take a lot of different forms, it’s got to be somewhat liquid but it still has to feel strong. One of the first things I figured out very quickly is [Venom] shouldn’t be dripping.

If he’s constantly dripping it starts to look comical, so that’s not scary at all. Then if you look at the tendrils, sometimes if you [make them] too thin, it does start getting into body horror and it looks a little too scary.

Fans of the older Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire should remember Venom from the third entry in the films. To start with, Peter Parker was the first host for Venom, which in turn gave him an upgraded black Spider-Man suit and enhanced strength and powers when he wore it.

This came at a cost, with Peter’s personality taking a negative approach towards others. Insomniac has embraced the same idea with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as we have seen trailers of black-suit Spider-Man fighting with a much more aggressive outlook, with co-protagonist Miles spotting the change.

According to previous Insomniac statements, Eddie Brock isn’t supposed to be Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as they have created a unique story compared to previous comics and films. With the cliffhanger left at the end of the first game, it’s looking to be Peter’s best friend, Harry Osbourne, but some fans think this is too straightforward. Either way, the look for Venom is looking great, and we can’t wait to see more. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases on October 20, 2023, on PS5.

What do you think of Venom’s design? Who is Venom’s host going to be? What do you think of Spider-Man‘s black suit? Should Insomniac include that graceful dance that we all know and love?  Get in touch, drop us a comment, and let us know your thoughts.
