Abbott Elementary exists because of the talent and bullheadedness of Quinta Brunson as she is the writer, executive producer, and lead on the show. She is also known to be outspoken and has been vocal about the lack and misrepresentation of Black people in popular media.

“I wanted to be on SNL back in the day but the audition process seemed long – so instead, I just created my own TV show, made sure it became really popular, won a bunch of Emmys, and then got asked to host,” she quipped, adding: “So much easier, so much easier.”

She continues,

“It’s a network sitcom like, say, Friends. Except, instead of being about a group of friends, it’s about a group of teachers. Instead of New York, it’s in Philadelphia and instead of not having Black people, it does.”

Jennifer Aniston’s fears are indeed true about Friends

Friends

Before Brunson spoke about Friends not having any black representation many had pointed such discrepancies out. Even the Friends star Jennifer Aniston was scared that a whole new generation hates friends and finds it problematic while another generation still cannot get enough of it. She said while promoting her film Murder Mystery 2 co-starring Adam Sandler,

“There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of ‘Friends’ and find them offensive. There were things that were never intentional and others…well, we should have thought it through…but I don’t think there was a sensitivity like there is now.”

Jennifer Aniston said this in context to how comedy has changed conspicuously through the years, what was funny then is now frowned upon. Jokes are not just jokes but people making them are held accountable for being insensitive, ignorant, and privileged. As important, impactful, and necessary comedy is one needs to be equally careful, concerned, and sensitive while doing or writing it.
