Although Pizzolatto was credited in the series as executive producer, he previously revealed he had no involvement in the writing and creative direction. He has also been very vocal about his aversion to the fourth season.

What’s The True Detective Season 4 Backlash About?

Amid all the hate and criticism that True Detective: Night Country endured, basketball star Marcus Jordan expressed his own obsession with the show. In one of his Twitter posts, he wrote:

Can we talk about how intense, suspenseful, relevant, poignant & beautiful this season of True Detective was?! Woah

In the same post, he also tagged series creator Nic Pizzolatto. The show has been the most-watched season of the franchise, as per a report from Deadline. It has got fans sharing their own theories and predictions on social media, and amid the hate from the series creator, director Issa López remained graceful with her response via Vulture:

I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative. I wrote this with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it.”

Fans would remember Pizzolatto’s comments on Instagram where he insisted on not having a part in the creation of the fourth season. He made remarks such as, “I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can’t blame me,” and “Haha. So stupid.”

Consequently, the series creator suffered criticism from fans as well because of how he handled the situation and, in true Pizzolatto fashion, he wrote a post on Instagram remarking:

I’d say ‘stay civil’ but of course civility has no place when criticism of a television show indicates some form of Hitlerian evil that must be stamped out.”

The post serves as a venue for fans to talk about all things True Detective, whether hate or support. He also took the chance to express how his criticism was taken personally by the viewers.

Despite Nic Pizzolatto’s criticism of True Detective Season 4, Issa López has got her supporters. In fact, HBO’s head of drama, Francesca Orsi, particularly invited her to pitch the idea of Night Country. Kali Reis also spoke about the director with so much admiration via Vulture:

The first time I even met Issa, on Zoom, as soon as I saw her, I’m like, ‘Whoa, this woman is a powerhouse.’ She’s somebody that just commands respect. She’s so intelligent, smart, knows exactly what she wants, knows how she needs to get it, knows what she needs out of people as a director. She knows how to speak everybody’s language.”

The current season finale reportedly performed 55% higher than Season 3 and has an average of 12.7 million viewers, as per Deadline. True Detective: Night Country is available to stream on HBO.
