Invincible and The Walking Dead are two of the most popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman. With Invincible’s run ending just one year earlier, both comic book series debuted in the same year. While The Walking Dead got its TV Series adaptation on October 31, 2010, Invincible entered the media world much later in 2021, when Amazon Prime Video premiered it on their platform.
As both comic books were written by the same author, fans expected some similarities in the writing scale or the storyline of the series, but instead, both of them called in a completely different genre with one being based on the action-adventure part and the other being a part of the horror genre.
However, The Walking Dead had some Invincible easter eggs that fans might have not noticed, as The Walking Dead was released almost a decade before Invincible. But since its release, Invincible has majorly paid off the easter egg debts of The Walking Dead by showing some of their own in the series.
Invincible Easter Eggs in The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead Featured a lot of easter eggs that pointed out towards the Invincible series. A cameo by Invincible Comics in “A New Deal,” one of The Walking Dead’s episodes, held more significance for the Grimes family. In the segment, Rick Grimes Jr. recites Invincible issue 56 from 2008.
This same comic book issue has already been shown in The Walking Dead’s 2013 Season 4 premiere when RJ’s mother Michonne gave Carl Grimes a stack of comics. Another Easter egg in The Walking Dead appeared in Sam Anderson’s bedroom during Season 6, where multiple action figures from Kirkman’s Invincible comic were displayed. These figures included Omni-Man, Atom Eve, Allen the Alien, and Invincible himself, Mark Grayson.
Another important easter egg shown in The Walking Dead is when a young Carl is seen wearing a T-shirt with the symbol of Science Dog, a superhero who is Mark Grayson’s favorite comic character in Invincible. And finally Invincible has also paid off the debt by showing some easter eggs from The Walking Dead series during its series.
The Walking Dead Easter Eggs in Invincible
Invincible also had some easter eggs that featured the famous series The Walking Dead. In the first episode, Invincible gave a small but clear homage to The Walking Dead. In the episode, while battling a villain, Mark Grayson is attempting to think of a superhero title for himself. Grayson asks the villain what he thinks he should be called as a superhero.
After giving the bad guy a hard time, Grayson suggests to himself that he should stick with his nickname, Ass Kicker. This was very much similar to Lil Ass Kicker, a nickname Daryl originally gave to Judith Grimes on The Walking Dead.
Although this was not such an easter egg, many characters from The Walking Dead moved over to Invincible to give the characters from the series their voice. These actors include Steven Yeun providing the voice of Invincible himself, Khary Payton, Ross Marquand, Chad L. Coleman, Michael Cudlitz, and many more.
