The crossover from the comics could end up having a greater meaning in the show, depending on which version of Spider-Man shows up.

  • The crossover occurred for one whole issue in the comics, where Invincible met the Avengers and helped Spider-Man take out Doctor Octopus.

Robert Kirkman’s Invincible is gearing up to launch the second part of its second season, and fans could not be more excited about the show’s return. What has had fans speculating about the story is that Invincible had a cross-company crossover with Spider-Man during his multiversal adventures, which fans are expecting to see in the show, even if it’s a long shot.

However, if Spider-Man is to show up in Invincible, Sony and Marvel have the choice to make one of the most iconic backdoor pilots in recent history. While the first episode of Invincible Season 2 Part 2 airs on March 15th, Marvel Animation will be busy releasing its continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, titled X-Men ’97. This has caused a lot of speculation as to which other animated series could return from Marvel Animation, and one story neatly fits into the niche that this whirlwind of situations has created.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series could make a comeback in Invincible

Invincible would be traveling across the multiverse, going through some serious emotional and physical turmoil at the hands of Armstrong Levy. One of the universes the character ends up going to in the comics is the Marvel Universe, where the character meets with Spider-Man and the Avengers, and even aids the former in dealing with Doctor Octopus.

Spider-Man: The Animated Series is one of the frontrunners among the shows that Marvel fans want to continue, just like X-Men: The Animated Series. This was further inflamed by comments made by the head writer of the animated series, John Semper, who says that Marvel ‘just has to call him’.

This makes quite the ripe setting for a backdoor pilot, one where Sony and Marvel could insert the multiverse-hopping Spider-Man into the story of Invincible, where they share their cross-company adventure, without it affecting either of their IPs in a significant manner. Given that Spider-Man: The Animated Series also ended on a multiversal note, having that character make an appearance in Invincible would be a nice call back for fans, and would also set up the character’s return to the mainstream with a bang.

Invincible Season 2 could serve as a litmus test for multiple Image Comics properties

Invincible Season 2 has been scarce with the multiverse, offering just a few scenes with the character that is at the center of it all: Armstrong Levy. However, given that Invincible shares his comic book world with multiple other heroes (that are not necessarily canon in the show), this might be the perfect opportunity to introduce them in a backdoor pilot capacity.

Characters like Savage Dragon, Spawn, Dynamo 5, and Witchblade are all popular takes on superheroes, and while they exist in the comics in the same universe as Invincible, the show might benefit from switching things up such that these properties simply share a multiverse instead of a canon.

Seth Rogen has lately made a splash with multiple superhero stories that have become quite the hit, be it The Boys, Incinvible, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This would be a ripe opportunity for the producer to try his hand at other well-known Image Comics properties, which might lead to them getting their own shows from Amazon.
