When it comes to epic action and mind-blowing stunts, John Wick’s in a league of its own. But behind the high-octane scenes lies a deep story of safety and respect, all thanks to the unforgettable Brandon Lee.

Chad Stahelski, who not only directed John Wick but also doubled for Lee in The Crow, recently opened up about how Lee’s tragic accident shook up the industry. In a no-holds-barred chat with Yahoo Movies UK (via Bleeding Cool), Stahelski broke down how that awful day redefined film safety.

Comparing it to how even the smartest people mess up in everyday situations, like texting while driving, he put it bluntly:

You know why car accidents happen? Car accidents happen to lawyers, they happen to f**king rocket scientists; you do one little stupid thing like spill a drink, comb your hair, check the mirror, f**king text, and you’re dead… John Wick is 90% guns, firearms. A lot of the safety or the methodology we use, it came about because of that accident.

The ripple effect of this tragedy led to serious upgrades in safety protocols, especially with firearms. Thanks to Lee’s legacy, action movies like John Wick now come with a laser-focus on safety.

Reflecting on Lee, Stahelski said, “Brandon was a total legend, super charismatic.” It’s a stark reminder that while Lee’s talent was immense, it took a heartbreaking accident to push for lasting change in how we handle film safety.

It caused a stir in the entertainment industry that people and fellow comedians could not believe it had happened. This sad event was a painful demonstration that there’s no sense in chasing the so-called American dream: the life of a Hollywood actor can rapidly turn into a nightmare.

While Lee’s life was unfortunately cut short, he continues to live in The Crow and in people’s memories. The film still enjoys cult status, and so does the performance of Lee, which still mesmerizes the fans.

John Wick is available to watch on Apple TV.
