Before she became one of the most iconic fashionistas of the generation, Blake Lively started her career with the film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The film starred an ensemble cast of Lively, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel. She even starred in the sequel The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.

Lively’s breakthrough role came with the TV show Gossip Girl, where she played Serena van der Woodsen. The series follows the lives of a group of rich teenagers who go to a prestigious high school. Lively’s Serena is the protagonist of the series, setting the events of the show into motion with her return to New York after a mysterious absence, to find that her ex-best friend has taken over as the ‘Queen Bee’ of their social circle.

Lively’s character Serena is described as an ‘It Girl’, a woman who seems to get everything due to her looks and personality. Blake Lively won the Teen Choice Award for her portrayal of Serena twice, once in 2008 and then again in 2011. The actress portrayed the character for six seasons, until 2012.

In 2022, Blake Lively did a breakdown of her iconic looks through the years with Vogue. The interview saw her look at some of the outfits which she donned both on and off-screen. She chronicled way back to her journey as a fashionista from way back in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants to her recent premiere of her husband Ryan Reynold’s film The Adam Project.

During the interview, she examined one of her looks from Gossip Girl, which she credits to have been her favorite from the series. She said to Vogue,

“This dress was one of the most critical fashion moments of Gossip Girl. Eric Damon our costume designer was so spectacular and inventive. He really took that idea to the next level of characters really having a look. They were almost caricatures of themselves. They had such distinct looks and fashion. I just find that so inspiring, to this day I bring that with me to every character.”

The look that Lively was talking about was a yellow, floral gown by Ralph Lauren that she is seen wearing in the season one finale of Gossip Girl, where she attends a wedding. She said,

“This was a Ralph Lauren dress. This was just such a beautiful look, those little cropped black gloves…The impact of the fashion on that show was greater than anything else. Greater than the storytelling and greater than the characters. It definitely changed my life.”

Blake Lively credited that outfit as being instrumental in getting her invited to her first Met Gala, for which she wore another Ralph Lauren dress. She also added the touch of the cropped black gloves for the outfit as a tribute to her Gossip Girl outfit. Since then, Lively has been a fashionista to look out for at subsequent Met Galas. And she has her iconic look for Gossip Girl to thank for that.
