Ah, how can anyone forget Jan de Bont’s Speed? The action-packed 1994 flick had everyone on the edge of their seats as we watched Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock race against time to save the day. The chemistry between the two stars was undeniable, and fans have been eagerly anticipating a reunion ever since.
Well, it appears that this wish may be granted shortly. During a recent appearance on the 50 MPH podcast, Reeves & Bullock discussed their intention to collaborate again on another project. And what better project than a third installment of the beloved Speed series?
Always the upbeat one, Reeves expressed his excitement at the idea of seeing Bullock again on screen. “We’d freakin’ knock it out of the park,” he declared confidently. And we have no doubt that he’s right—these two have a unique energy together that can’t be replicated.
Revival: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock Team Up for Speed 3?
The two lead actors of Speed, Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, recently offered a positive update for the potential third installment. In the 1994 action thriller, the latter plays an LAPD officer, and Bullock assumes the role of a passenger who must maintain a speed of over fifty miles per hour to prevent an explosive-rigged bus from blowing up.
Though there has been much talk in recent years about a potential third flick, Reeves chose not to return with Bullock for 1997’s Speed 2: Cruise Control. The actors, however, hinted at an update on Speed 3 during a recent appearance on the 50 MPH podcast, which chronicles the creation of the original film. “We would freakin’ knock it out of the park”, the actor said, expressing his confidence in his and Bullock’s ability to succeed.
Meanwhile, in addition to acknowledging their on-screen chemistry, the actress expressed interest in working with Reeves again:
“There’s no formula. It just is. Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe. Are we on little scooters at Disneyland?”
“It does feel like there is a siren call to it, like something was not done”, Reeves continued, adding:
“I would love to work with you again before our eyes close.”
It remains to be seen if Speed 3 is Reeves and Bullock’s next project together. After years of carrying the fervent wish by fans to see Reeves and Bullock again for Speed 3, the time appears ripe for this to become a reality.
The Magnetic Chemistry Between Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock
The obvious chemistry Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves have off-screen adds even more intrigue to the prospect of this potential collaboration. Despite it being known that they had feelings for one another while filming Speed, these two never really entered into a formal relationship. Indeed, in an interview with Esquire, Bullock revealed that the two had never actually dated.
Regardless, Reeves and Bullock said in the 50 MPH podcast that creating chemistry with each other on the action thriller set came naturally to them. The former said:
“We had an affection. And the characters themselves have an affection. I think Jack and Annie’s is different than Sandra’s and Keanu’s, but I think we played off each other and I think it was just fun. I think, also, we kind of trusted each other, right?”
Bullock reflected on her own film memories, saying:
“I was just grateful and excited to be with who I was with, and I just adored, and still adore, Keanu.”
The film did turn out to be critically and commercially successful, earning $350.4 million on a $30–37 million budget (Box Office Mojo). In 1997, Bullock starred in the follow-up, Speed 2: Cruise Control, which did not star Reeves.
It remains to be seen if a third film will take place. Still, keep your fingers crossed, Speed fans. It looks like we may just get the reunion we’ve been dreaming of!
