Tom Cruise has been under the media spotlight for almost the entirety of his career following the actor’s enormous status, and joining forces with him also brought Hayley Atwell under heavy media scrutiny. This led to rumors floating about the two being romantically inclined toward each other back in 2020. But by the fall of 2021, it was alleged that the two parted ways, even though there was no official confirmation about the two ever being in a relationship.

Hayley Atwell debunks rumors claiming she shared a romantic bond with Tom Cruise

Back in 2020, Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell were spotted together attending Wimbledon, which prompted some to believe the two might be involved in a romantic bond. However, this can’t be further from the truth, as the actress claimed the two were never in a relationship, claiming the 41-year-old actress saw Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie as “sort of two uncles.” The actress further explained the reports were partly upsetting, as it impacted her personal life. She explained,

“I would be like, ‘Ooh, there’s some weird rumors, and it feels base, it feels a little dirty, it feels grubby, it’s not what I’m about. Why are things being assumed or projected onto me about my relationship with my work colleague and boss?… it’s involving people in my actual life, my personal life, who have to be on the receiving end of that. It becomes invasive.”

Tom Cruise, who has his fair share of experience dealing with media scrutiny, helped his costar in dealing with these outside chatters by giving some invaluable advice to her.

Hayley Atwell spent 5 months studying drifting to perfect her stunt sequence in MI

Like Ethan Hunt, Hayley Atwell doesn’t pull punches when it comes to delivering her absolute commitment to perform the required stunts on her own. Considering the MI franchise heavily leans towards practical effects for the most part, Atwell explained she had to study drifting for five months in order to do justice to the drifting sequence in the film while being handcuffed to Cruise. She said,

“I had studied drifting for five months previously to principal photography, so my level of being able to drive competently had hugely developed and increased over that time. But also, you have to transport that particular car chase sequence to a real city, a real location that has a whole other level of obstacles, and the absolute necessity of making sure that we were treating it respectfully.”
