Starring in several projects throughout the years, Sheridan has had his fair share of acting roles before he became a screenwriter. Leaving the profession for good, Sheridan revealed that he learned a lot from his acting days which helped him write better.
The former actor is credited with being the co-creator of the iconic 2018 show Yellowstone and being the creator of the 2021 Jeremy Renner series Mayor of Kingstown. Alongside the series, Sheridan is also the writer for Tulsa King, 1883, and, several others.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan talked about how he learned the art of writing from doing everything that he did not wish to do in his acting. From dialing down dialogues to looking for complex characters in simple plots, the co-creator of Yellowstone had a lot to share.
Exposition in dialogue is something you do a lot when you’re on television like I was. It gave me an allergy to that. I’m allergic to exposition now in my writing.
Sheridan further continued,
I look for absurdly simple plots, so I can simply focus on the characters. Having an understanding of what dialog’s easy to say and hard to say, I think that that’s helpful too.
On the contrary, the exposition does become sometimes necessary if the plot is really convoluted (like Netflix’s Dark, for example). However, Sheridan is also right in the matter that sometimes the dialogues are often dumbed down to another extent for people to understand!
Being the writer for Wind River and Mayor of Kingstown, both of which stars Jeremy Renner in lead roles, he and Sheridan have quite a good bond of friendship. Before signing on the Mayor of Kingstown series, Jeremy Renner had so much faith in Sheridan’s writing that he didn’t even read the script!

Mayor of Kingstown is a thriller series that deals with the American prison system. Although there is much more to the story than that, fans have been giving their love to the 2021 series over the years. Taylor Sheridan worked extensively on the series as a writer.
Before Jeremy Renner joined the series as the lead star, he had worked with Sheridan in the 2017 movie Wind River. Stating that that was one of his most iconic projects, Renner developed a blind faith in Taylor Sheridan’s writing.
During an episode on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Renner revealed that he didn’t even read the script of Mayor of Kingstown before he signed the contract!
We were in early talks about a lot of different things. He just created so much material that, you know, I never get to work with the guy anymore. He’s just too busy creating shows and run the shows, you know.
He further continued,
Wind River is my favorite job. But with this one, I signed on to do the first season of Mayor of Kingstown without reading a word of it, just off what was kinda pitched to me over the phone, and I wanna work with him again so let’s do it.
Luckily for the actor, Sheridan was a man of his word and Mayor of Kingstown became one of the most successful series by Taylor Sheridan. With 3 seasons to its name, the 2021 series currently stands at a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDB.
Meanwhile, Sheridan’s iconic 2018 series Yellowstone received a rating of 8.7/10 on IMDB and a whopping 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. Both shows are available to stream on Paramount Network in the U.S.
