The game managed to win several prestigious awards at The Game Awards 2023, including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction but there is an Oscar-winning movie that gave the creators the confidence: 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Despite its absurd plot, Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) managed to sweep up at every major award show. The film won seven Academy Awards out of eleven nominations. It is currently estimated to be the most-awarded film of all time, and is considered to be one of the greatest films of all time. The success of this movie gave the creators of Alan Wake 2 the confidence that what they created is synchronous with what people like.
Everything Everywhere All at Once gave confidence to the creators of Alan Wake 2
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Sam Lake, the creative director of Remedy Entertainment, named 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once as the movie that boosted the confidence of the game’s creators. Lake said,
“We were already really far into making this, but it gave me confidence into understanding that what we’re doing here, we are doing these things at the right time.”
Throughout the development of the game, Lake was worried that the game would be a flop due to its absurd plot but due to Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s success, he got the reassurance that they are working on something that fans will like. You can watch the movie online by streaming it on Prime Video or Paramount+ with Showtime. As for Netflix users, the streaming platform has announced that the movie will be available for streaming from 23 February 2024 onwards.

Sam Lake says Alan Wake 2 is not bounded by one genre
It was concerning for Lake when he realized that Alan Wake 2 is a mix of different genres but as mentioned, it was all clear with the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Lake explained that the main character, Alan Wake, believes that the story must stay true to the genre, making it a major flaw,
“I feel like Alan Wake’s view in this is quite limited, and that’s one of the interesting flaws in our character – If you play Alan Wake 2, most certainly you will see that, when it comes to story and storytelling, it’s not bound by one genre.”
Without a doubt, Alan Wake 2 is one of the most popular games of 2023. It was ranked first on Time’s top 10 best video games of 2023 list and managed to take home three awards at the 2023 Game Awards in the categories: Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction.
