Jonathan Majors’ firing has placed Marvel in a challenging position, as his character Kang was intended to become the next Thanos-level threat to the Avengers. Recent rumored reports suggested that Marvel was eyeing Emmy-winning star Colman Domingo as a potential replacement for Majors. Domingo has now addressed these rumors, stating that while he hasn’t heard anything official about the rumors, he is open to the possibility.

Jonathan Majors was fired by Disney following his guilty conviction on misdemeanor assault and harassment charges filed by his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Another rumor earlier suggested that Star Wars actor Jon Boyega was also being considered for Kang.

Initial reports about Colman Domingo potentially replacing Jonathan Majors‘ role as Kang came from industry insider Daniel Richtman. Fans generally seemed satisfied with this casting rumor, considering Domingo had proved his worth with performances in projects like Euphoria and Rustin. Domingo won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor for the former, while the latter earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globes.
The Zola actor has now responded to the casting rumors when he appeared for an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Domingo shared that he was aware of the “talks and conversations” but had no idea about whether any of it was true. However, he appreciated the passionate fan discussions and expressed joy in knowing that people were speaking “lovingly” and “kindly” about his potential casting. The Fear the Walking Dead actor told ET:
“I don’t know, I’m always looking at what I have to do right now… I know there’s talk and conversations around, and I don’t know how much is true. I don’t even get that from my team, I can’t tell if it’s true or not. The fans are passionate. Somehow my name is out there in the world [and] I like the idea of just having your name called and someone speaking lovingly and kindly about something is a beautiful thing.”
However, one major challenge with Domingo’s casting would be explaining the shift from the 34-year-old Majors to the much older Domingo, now 54. Rumors suggest that Marvel may introduce Domingo as a Kang variant different from the ones featured in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki.
THR earlier reported that Marvel has dropped the subtitle, The Kang Dynasty, from their Avengers 5 movie. This change could mean that Domingo’s potential character might bring considerable changes to the initially planned storyline.

Interestingly, in a two-year-old interview, Colman Domingo had conveyed his interest in playing a baddie in one of the two major superhero franchises. Speaking to AwardsWatch, Domingo mentioned that he was physically fit and prepared to play a character in either the Marvel or DC universe.
The Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom actor was answering the interviewer’s question about whether he would join his Candyman director Nia DaCosta‘s The Marvels. Domingo shared with AwardsWatch:
“I’m jumping in. It’s funny. Just the other day, I was looking at something and I thought like that’s wild. I haven’t been a part of any [universe]. I’m part of the Fear the Walking Dead universe, but when it comes to Marvel or DC, I think I’m ready now. I’m worked out, fit… I just want to be the villain. I don’t want to be the good guy. I want to do some really dirty, nasty work.”
Domingo partially fulfilled his DC dream when he voiced Batman for Spotify’s scripted podcast The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark. As of now, Marvel hasn’t disclosed the direction it is taking following Jonathan Majors’ exit. The anticipated crossover movies, Avengers 5 and 6, are supposed to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively.
