Unfortunately, sending hate on the internet has become a huge part of pop culture. In any given situation fans all over send hateful texts, and death threats to people in the celebrity’s life who they think have hurt their favorite. This has been happening with Grande and her loved ones as well.

So much so that the singer urged her fans to not do that, she wrote in an Instagram story posted Saturday (via NBC):

“I just wanted to say anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what I would ever encourage… I ask that you please do not. It is not how to support me. It is the opposite.”

Her new album, Eternal Sunshine takes its name from Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey’s 2004 sci-fi romance film called Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The film follows two adults who erase each other from their minds following the end of their relationship. Grande naming her album after such a film speaks volumes about her pain.

Ariana Grande’s public image has been in the trenches since her divorce from Dalton Gomez. The separation in itself was a notoriously private affair, like the rest of the former couple’s relationship. But some other elements at play caused chaos. For instance, her appearance has often sparked concerns among netizens and most recently after her Oscars appearance. The singer previously addressed the concerns about her appearance.

Sources claim (via Business Insider) that both Grande and Slater started dating after separating from their respective partners. Just three days after the news of her separation from Gomez, TMZ reported Grande’s affair with her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater. This caused a lot of controversy since Slater had divorced his high school sweetheart and the mother of his son not long before.

Eternal Sunshine is out now.
