Ridley Scott’s Alien is iconic in many ways. Not only was it a turning point for the action genre, but Sigourney Weaver became one of the first female actresses to classify as a major action hero. It set records straight and opened a new door of opportunities for the franchise itself. In the midst of this, sequels and spin-offs were made. While some were well received, others not so much.
The latest installment in the franchise, Alien: Romulus had a lot relying on it. To carry a legacy as big as that of Scott’s and appease the audience at the same time is no small feat. However, its attempt to honor the same may have also become its own bane.
Everything that glitters is not always gold. Neither is the upcoming movie, especially from the fans’ perspective.
Alien: Romulus Fails Its First Trial
The first test that any movie has to pass to be successful is when it releases its first teaser. If it manages to catch the fans’ attention positively, the road to success at the box office becomes easier. If, however, fans do not like some aspect of the trailer, they become more hesitant to spend almost two hours watching something they might not like.
Recently, the teaser trailer for Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus was released and the reactions that it is getting from fans of the film series are concerning, to say the least. The first thing that everyone noticed was how the movie was going back to the franchise’s horror roots. Suspense and terrifying elements are very much present after having seemingly disappeared for the last few films.
However, many cannot help but notice how the movie seems to lack originality. While its trailer has the same essence as the first two films, many fans are accusing Alien: Romulus of directly copying Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien.
Alien: Romulus – Remake Or Sequel?
After the trailer of the upcoming Alien: Romulus was released, many noticed how similar the movie is to the franchise’s first part. Calling it a recycling of what worked in the past, they condemn the series for doing the same thing over and over.
Additionally, some pointed out that they do not like how many sequels these films are getting and how they refuse to leave well enough alone.
Didn’t see anything that would elevate this beyond a C+. It looks like another recycling of the series DNA. Same tired looking Ripley protagonist, claustrophobic settings. Might as well call it a remake.

That's my issue. It literally looks like a remake, and I doubt they'll be able to beat Alien and Aliens.
Plus they've lost my trust after the last several installments.

I was talking about this with friends. The best way to keep the franchise fresh is do something different genre-wise. A horror Alien film will always be compared to the original, an action Alien film will always be compared to Aliens. Do something different.

Female lead?
BORING.
I'm out.
Maybe try something DIFFERENT for this tired franchise. Its the same movie over and over and over.— The Widow Maker (@DamienNightwing) March 20, 2024
They also mentioned how even when they try new things, they fail to impress. They added that instead of calling the movie a sequel to the film series, they should simply call it a remake of the original. Such an approach would also help them get more fans interested.
On the other hand, many fans are glad that the franchise is going back to its roots and hope that it delivers on what it is promising. They love how good the teaser of the film looks and cannot wait to see it in the theaters.
The poster goes hard.
Seems like a return to the horror roots of the franchise. I'm all in pic.twitter.com/Aag5FfPJp2
