Mexican actress Melissa Barrera, known for appearing in the fifth and sixth installments of the Scream franchise as Sam Carpenter, was shockingly fired from the films, ahead of the Scream 7 sequel. According to reports from Variety, the removal allegedly happened in November 2023, following her contentious social media statements on the Israel-Hamas War.
Showing support for Palestine on social media apparently got Melissa Barrera pulled out of the franchise. Despite her supposed appearance in Scream 7, Spyglass took the decision to fire her. Issuing a statement as per the outlet, the production banner noted their zero tolerance policy for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.
Following Melissa Barrera’s exit, Jenna Ortega and even Scream 7 director Christopher Landon dropped out of the franchise. Meanwhile, although Barrera is no longer a part of the Scream franchise, she’s still keeping her horror resume alive.
