Charlize Theron has nailed every single one of her onscreen portrayals, going the extra mile to do everything necessary to get her character just right. Her immaculate roles distributed among multiple genres and movies only prove this claim further.
Yet, as flawless and on-point as she tries to get her roles, some critics somehow still find flaws in it.
Just like what happened when she gave a truly spectacular performance in the Oscar-nominated role of Megyn Kelly in her 2019 comedy thriller masterpiece, Bombshell.
Although Theron made sure to go above and beyond to get one of her most unbelievable transformations for the role, her performance still failed to completely enchant Kelly’s husband Doug Brunt’s attention.

In Bombshell, a story based on true events, Charlize Theron undertook the role of Megyn Kelly, one of the three incredibly ambitious and strong women anchors of Fox News who risk their everything to expose the very man who made them famous for s-xual harassment.
And her performance was equally brilliant as well, judging from the multiple accolades she was nominated for and won for the same. Yet, it still failed to completely appease Kelly’s husband, Doug Brunt.
During a full discussion at a round table interview by none other than Megyn Kelly on YouTube, Brunt shared his unequivocal reaction to the same about seeing someone else play his wife onscreen:
“Physically it was there. I thought the voice was forced, trying to get down deep. I just thought it was a little one-dimensional and just didn’t capture some of your humor,” he said.
However, at the same time, Kelly’s husband also acknowledged Theron’s massive talent and the lengths she went to make her portrayal look as believable as possible, as he said:
“I thought she did a nice, you know, she’s talented.”
Kelly, on the other hand, found it hard to critique the actress’ performance as her, as can be derived from her honest reaction:
“I can’t speak to the job Charlize Theron did because I’m just too close to it,” she said. “It’s too weird to see somebody, who looks just like you, on the screen pretending to be you.”
But at the same time, Megyn Kelly also mentioned how she felt Theron was “incredibly talented”, echoing her husband’s statement about the same. Well, for the most part, Charlize Theron still managed to pull it all off splendidly, as both the husband and wife would agree as well.
Charlize Theron Went Above And Beyond For Bombshell
While Charlize Theron’s onscreen performance as Megyn Kelly in Bombshell was incredible, what was more commendable was the extremes she went to just to get her physical appearance and behavior to match with that of the person she was playing.
First of all, a massive credit to the makeup and prostheses that transformed the actress into Kelly as much as was realistically possible. However, merely applying those prostheses on Theron’s face too took close to three hours, as reported by Business Insider.
Not only did she have to use fake eyelashes that came in pieces (Lashify Gossamers) and colored contact lenses to make her eyes look similar to Kelly’s, but she also had to wear prosthetic eyelid pieces for the same.
Then there were the nose plugs that Theron had to put on every single day to make her nostrils a bit wider and raise the nose tip up like that of Kelly. She further had to wear jaw pieces, a fake chin, and multiple wigs to make her appearance as similar to Megyn Kelly’s as possible.
Adding to all of this was her remarkable portrayal of the journalist, which ultimately led to her looking like a variant of Kelly who looked and acted just like her, and the transformation of which eventually even granted Charlize Theron her 3rd Oscar nomination for Best Actress, among other accolades.
