John Cena’s tenure in WWE stands as one of the most illustrious in the sport’s history, cementing his position as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, if not the greatest. Widely regarded as one of WWE’s biggest icons, Cena’s legacy can’t really be touched by anyone and it’s not really hard to see why either. With that said, there is a massive decision that the Leader of Cenation made which many fans absolutely do not agree with one bit and it changed the course of WWE for good.
From his memorable WWE Championship triumph against JBL at WrestleMania 21 in 2005 to his legendary clashes with The Rock at WrestleMania, Cena’s career is packed with iconic moments and matches that firmly establish him as a future Hall of Famer.
John Cena Doesn’t Regret Making Massive Change to His Character Which Many Fans Didn’t Like
WWE used to be TV-14 for several years until it went PG and there were a lot of people who definitely hated the move, especially after John Cena became the face of the PG era of WWE, as he was the goody two shoes, never-do-wrong character that children liked but adults hated.
John Cena recently appeared on the Armchair Expert podcast to discuss his transition from wrestling to acting, as well as his time in WWE. The 16-time World Champion talked about the evolution of his onscreen character, especially as WWE shifted towards a more family-friendly PG product back in 2008. Cena addressed the challenge of changing his breakout character, the Doctor of Thuganomics, but explained that it was ultimately a personal decision.
“WWE moved towards PG, they weren’t quite PG yet but they wanted to move in that direction … you see little kids wearing your stuff and your stuff is pushing the boundaries and then I was like, you know what? I want to stop doing this … It was my choice.”
He added,
“I had built a relationship with the audience enough where they kind of knew my value system too … so my thing became like, take a bunch of punishment, never give up … I wanted to put hustle, loyalty and respect, which really, hustle, loyalty and respect are right in my value lane. So as a young man I got to take my background, and it was a slow change.’‘
Big Match John is now seen in a much better light compared to before as well. Regardless, WWE is now slowly going back to its TV-14 roots, especially thanks to The Rock, so we’ll have to see whether that will continue in the end.
John Cena Was Also Involved In WrestleMania 40’s Main Event
WWE WrestleMania 40 Sunday was filled with surprises. Stephanie McMahon, Bubba Ray Dudley, and Snoop Dogg, made their presence felt that day but clearly, Triple H and co kept the best thing for the main event.
The Bloodline Rules match between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns was the main event and it featured all the glitz and glamour one would expect from a match of this magnitude. Unsurprisingly, The Bloodline made their presence felt as well and interfered in the match to try to help The Head of The Table pick up the win.
Thankfully, several stars also stepped in to help even the odds for the American Nightmare, which included Jey Uso, John Cena and The Undertaker. Uso took out his brother Jimmy Uso, John Cena cleaned house as he destroyed Solo Sikoa and The Undertaker came out and demolished The Rock with a devastating chokeslam.
When all was said and done, Cody Rhodes hit a triple Cross Rhodes on Roman Reigns and finally put him down for the three count, thus becoming the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion and making history. John Cena was truly part of history and he couldn’t have been happier.
