Long before Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s relationship became the complicated public divorce that rocked the world, the two stars’ romance blossomed on the sets of their first film together titled The Rum Diary. The 2011 stylish love triangle set in the 60s which also featured Aaron Eckhart, marked the beginning of Depp and Heard’s love affair.
The film also gave the Aquaman actor her first big recognizable role in Hollywood, and an opportunity to showcase her acting chops. Heard admitted though, that the audition process that led up to finally casting her for the role, was a challenging and demanding one, owing to the intensity of her character.
Amber Heard Faced A Tough Audition For The Rum Diary
In 2011, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp starred together in The Rum Diary, a comedy-drama based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson. Also starring Aaron Eckhart, the film set in the 60s, received mixed reviews upon release. Heard though, was recognized as a classic beauty with a lot of charisma and talent. The DC star who was a big fan of the author, spoke of her surreal experience working on the film which included a very challenging audition process. In an interview with Collider, Heard said,
It’s a prestigious movie and it’s got a great, talented cast, so they wanted to make sure they had the right person for the role, but it was a torturous process. It was painful. I found out that they were making this movie and my heart fluttered. I remember thinking, “Oh, wouldn’t that be amazing,” but didn’t really consider it, in a real way, as a possibility. And then, six months later, I was on set. It was a weird ride.”
Being the only female star on set, the Never Back Down actor was grateful to have portrayed a significant role in the film, while also having the opportunity to work on a classic vintage look with her clothes and make-up.
Amber Heard Was All Praise For Her Co-Stars In The Rum Diary
While there was a lot of animosity that entered Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s relationship which led up to the highly publicized divorce trial, there was a time when the two stars shared a lot of respect for each other as co-stars and partners. Heard, who first worked with Depp in The Rum Diary, gushed about the Sleepy Hollow actor’s talent, professionalism, and demeanor. In an interview with Collider, she said,
“He’s a wonderful artist, and such a talented person. I got along with him, splendidly. He’s charming and wonderful to work with. He’s a dream. It was such a creative environment. I was working with real artists, and that’s difficult to do and very rare, in this industry, ironically.”
Heard also had words of praise for her other co-star Aaron Eckhart with whom she shared a very different relationship, by her own admission. The DC star spoke of Eckhart’s talent and ability to do challenging roles with ease and revealed that she enjoyed being on set to watch him work.
