The first season of the TV show didn’t follow the usual storyline from the Disney movies. Instead, it focused on real high school students at East High, where the original High School Musical was filmed.

The original HSM debuted in 2006 and was an instant hit. Disney subsequently released two sequels to the original film. The main leads in the original cast were Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. But, it seems like NBA star Anthony Edwards wants to replace Efron if the remake ever happens.

While talking to the media in Indianapolis before the 2024 All-Star Game, Edwards was questioned about the most absurd basketball scene in a movie or show. Yet, the Timberwolves guard took the chance to reminisce about one of his favorites. He went on to say:

“I like High School Musical for some reason. Troy Bolton. I like the scenes. They put it together pretty dope, pretty dope. I like that movie.”

When asked if he wanted to be in the next movie of the franchise, the Atlanta native said a big yes. “I would. I actually would for sure,” the NBA player said with a smile.

Although there’s no doubt that his charisma, athleticism, and star power could bring a fresh energy to the High School Musical franchise.

Anthony Edwards’ Earlier Hollywood Venture Before Expressing Interest in High School Musical

If you think starring in High School Musical’s remake would be Anthony Edwards’ Hollywood debut, that’s not correct. The 22-year-old has been in 2022’s comedy-drama as Kermit Wilts—a young talent who competes with the main character Bo Cruz—played by NBA veteran Juancho Hernangómez.

The movie is about Stanley Beren (Adam Sandler), who’s a basketball scout having a hard time. He finds Hernangomez’s Bo Cruz, a Spanish street basketball talent, and sees him as a chance to return to the NBA.

Edwards’s Kermit Wilts is a top prospect who bullies Cruz during pre-draft workouts. The Timberwolves star isn’t in it much but shines in the scenes he’s in.

His performance in the film as the main antagonist was praised by many, including the film’s producer and star Sandler. In an interview (via Zone Coverage), the Click star said of Edwards:

“All the guys loved him, too. We played one day, we had a week where, he was with a lot of the guys from the league, and they were shooting around, and you couldn’t help that any time Anthony did something, everybody would smile, laugh. He’s just ferocious and funny as hell.”
