Marvel fans have been through the emotional journey of witnessing several MCU couples going through heartbreaking separation, way too often. From Iron Man and Pepper Potts to Wanda and Vision, fans have witnessed death and heartbreak more than needed. But the story goes beyond the onscreen projection.
Apparently, during Avengers: Infinity War, when Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany delivered the emotional scene of Vision’s death, it was all an improvisation. To be specific, the heartbreaking death scene was an embarrassing improv, as the actors went off script to deliver ridiculous dialogues that had to be edited later.
MCU Stars Went Off Script for an Embarrassing Improv
MCU movies have often witnessed tearful goodbyes that were hard to accept for fans. But, surprisingly a few of them were major improvisations, like the one between Wanda and Vision. Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Vision, played by Paul Bettany, shared a heartbreaking separation in Avengers: Infinity War.
In the scene, Vision asked Wanda to destroy the infinity stone that was keeping him alive, before it fell into Thanos’ hands. Therefore, the scene portrayed an emotional separation between Wanda and Vision, followed by Vision’s death. According to an interview with IMDb, Olsen mentioned how the whole scene was actually an improv.
Directors Joseph and Anthony Russo asked Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany to ab-lib the dialogue for the death scene. Therefore, the actors looked at each other in “abject terror”, realizing how hard it would be for them to improvise such an emotional scene without embarrassment.
Editors Had to Manage Vision’s Death Scene in Post Production
Evidently, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany were right to guess that the filming part would be embarrassing and ridiculous. The death scene involving a lot of visual effects undeniably turned the energy on set quite silly. Thus, both the MCU actors faced difficulty in delivering the emotional scene with utmost seriousness.
“It’s very embarrassing shooting those kinds of things, because, like, the world depends on you doing it. And we did some improvising, which is hard to improvise those moments.” Olsen shared with Variety.
Further, according to the interview with IMDb, Paul Bettany recalled how they both acted out embarrassing bits and shared ridiculous dialogues, as they went off script. However, the scenes and the dialogue were later edited out during post-production. The duo mentioned how the editors brought out the real magic in the scene.
“That’s my favorite moment because it was so ridiculous. The whole thing was so ridiculous and to make it so emotional felt so silly…but the editors did a great job.” Olsen shared.
Eventually, major set pieces and effects for Vision’s death scene were added in post-production. Shooting Vision’s death was so awkward for the MCU stars that editors had to manage the scene later on.
