Smallville is remembered due to its unique take on the Superman mythos. A story dedicated to the young Clarke Kent before he honed on the cape of the popular superhero, the series starred numerous talented and notable actors over the course of 10 years. The series not only reflects on the life of the young Kent but also focuses on how Lex Luther became the ruthless Superman villain. The role of Lex Luthor, essayed by Michael Rosenbaum, was originally offered to his friend, the Marvel actor Anson Mount.
Anson Mount recently revealed the surprising news while also regretting how much of a stupid decision he had made by rejecting the role of Superman’s greatest enemy.
Anson Mount Reveals He Almost Became Lex Luthor
The Marvel actor Anson Mount has starred in multiple movies, from Star wars to Dr. Strange 2, and is known for his remarkable acting. He is also long-time friends with Michael Rosenbaum. While on Talk Ville Podcast along with Rosenbaum, the Black Bolt actor recalled the discussion he had with Michael Rosenbaum when the latter called him up to share the news that he has been cast as Lex Luthor.
“Back when you got the role, you were telling me, ‘I’m doing this Superman thing; I’m playing Lex Luthor.’ We were on the phone or something.’ [I said] ‘Oh my god, they offered that to me!’ It just came out; I wasn’t thinking. It was the most stupidest, most insensitive thing to say that I have ever said. I honestly can’t recall [when asked why he turned it down]. My representatives really didn’t want me to shave my head, but that didn’t really bother me. I honestly can not remember why.”
We might not have Anson Mount as Lex Luther, but the Dr. Strange 2 actor went on to essay the role of Paul Hayden, a Lex Luther story villain.

Anson Mount Still Made Way To Star In Smallville
Ansen Mount while regretting that he turned down the role of cold-hearted Lex Luthor still managed to make his way to star on Smallville. With diverging storylines, offering a never before insight into the life of Clarke Kent and Lex Luthor, the series introduced viewers to a number of villains and characters. Mount appeared in episode 19 of Season 2, as the Paul Hayden. He essayed the role of the villain of Lex Luthor’s tragic story as the ex-boyfriend of Luthor’s then-girlfriend, Helen Bryce.
While it would certainly be impressive to see Anson Mount as Lex Luthor, given his riveting film career, we can’t help but remain loyal to Rosenbaum, who set the stage for some of the best portrayals of Luthor.
