With its gull-wing doors and svelte stainless steel body, the DeLorean DMC-12 has come to be associated with the Back to the Future film franchise. Nonetheless, DeLorean’s production was short-lived, but it gained widespread recognition when Christopher Lloyd’s science fiction film series Back to the Future used it as a time machine.
It has become an iconic piece of pop culture, encapsulating a whole cinematic era and capturing the hearts and minds of moviegoers everywhere. But when Lloyd (who assumed the role of Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown) shared his actual thoughts about the legendary vehicle, fans were taken aback. He thought the DeLorean was the ideal vehicle for Doc’s mission and he loved the idea of bringing it into the narrative. Actually, it was a tight squeeze, but futuristic, in his opinion.

Christopher Lloyd: The Delorean was ‘Tight and uncomfortable’
In Back to the Future, the DeLorean is the prop that holds the most significance. Christopher Lloyd played the iconic Dr. Emmett Brown, the man behind the clock-obsessed time machine. He felt that the DeLorean was the vehicle that would best help Brown achieve his goal. However, he thought it was futuristic, but it was also “tight and uncomfortable”. As stated in Caseen Gaines’ book We Don’t Need Road: The Making of the Back to the Future Trilogy, the actor recalled:
“It was tight and uncomfortable.Usually we had to shoot with the windows closed. One time we were in there with Einstein, Doc’s dog. He did not smell too good. We got pretty close and it got pretty stagnant in there.”
Filming scenes through the windshield required removing the back of the car due to its cramped space. Lloyd’s admission that he dislikes the Back to the Future DeLorean has therefore likely demoralized a lot of fans.
Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale wrote the 1985 sci-fi film Back to the Future. Thomas F. Wilson, Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson, Michael J. Fox, and Lloyd were among the actors who starred. It was set in 1985 and centered on Marty McFly (Fox), a young man who, while traveling through time in a DeLorean car constructed by his eccentric scientist friend Emmett Brown (Lloyd), is accidentally sent back to 1955.
Michael J. Fox Said a Back to the Future Reboot is not Necessary
Michael J. Fox claimed that even if the original cast is not involved, he is okay with the concept of a Hollywood Back to the Future revival. He shared this while discussing his life and career with Variety:
“I’m not fanatical. Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.”
Yet that did not imply that he found it to be a good idea. In addition, Fox believed that co-writer Bob Gale and director and author of the trilogy, Robert Zemeckis, would not approve.
“I don’t think it needs to be. I think Bob and Bob have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”
After the series concluded with Back to the Future Part III in 1990, was Fox ever asked to reprise his role as the time-traveling Marty McFly? The actor replied:
“I’m sure somebody thought about it. But I was in the early stages of Parkinson’s at that point, so I don’t know that I would have wanted to take that on. Right after ‘Part Three’ had done well, there might have been conversations about it, but I never got involved in them.”
Thanks to its increasing popularity, Back to the Future is now regarded as one of the greatest science-fiction films ever made. Numerous books about its production, documentaries, and commercials have been inspired by its enduring popularity.
