From Jaws leaving him scarred at the age of 5 to The Shining inspiring his performance in The Spiderwick Chronicles, the horror genre has had a huge impact on Christian Slater over the years. However, when it comes to real life, the actor never believed in the supernatural until spending one night in a hotel in Miami, which slightly changed his stance on the subject.
While he and his wife had plans to spend six days in the hotel, the Interview with the Vampire star recounted leaving The Biltmore Hotel just after their first night.
Christian Slater Recalled His Weird Night in The Biltmore Hotel in Miami
Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Christian Slater recounted his experience in The Biltmore Hotel in Miami, when asked about his stance on the supernatural. While the actor was initially warned about the hotel’s haunting history by the staff, he reasonably felt it was all fiddlesticks, and checked into his room on the 13th floor without any hesitation. But it didn’t take Slater long to realize that there was something off about the hotel room.
The Heathers star recalled the lights were flickering and the door blew open, and on top of that, he had the weirdest nightmare, which only made things worse.
He explained:
“My wife and I, we checked into this hotel in Miami, the Biltmore Hotel and it’s… kind of a creepy Hotel, you know, and we got this room and it was located on the 13th floor. And they did say, when we checked in, that it does have a history, you know, of Haunting, So I was like, ‘Oh, come on, you know this is ridiculous. I’m not a child… I’m beyond this and I don’t believe any of it.’ And so we went up there… you know, that night, while we were sleeping, you know, the lights were flickering and a door flew open. I had like the weirdest nightmare, it was very strange.”
But unlike many horror protagonists, the actor didn’t push his luck further and left the hotel ASAP. Slater further recalled the hotel didn’t charge them extra, even though he and his wife were supposed to be there for six days, as the staff in The Biltmore Hotel crew understood his situation.
Jaws Gave Christian Slater a Life-Long Fear of the Ocean
While Jaws is one of the most influential films of all time, it certainly isn’t a film that is suitable for kids’ viewing. However, Upon its release, Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws was rated PG, following the lack of s-xual content, and minimal use of profanity. Slater, who was 5 at the time, recalled being taken into the theatre to watch the horror unfold, which definitely left a lasting impact on him.
Although he holds the film dearest to his heart, it did give him a life-long fear of the ocean, as he recounted that his mother might not have known what the film was actually about.
He told CinemaBlend:
“My mother did take me to see Jaws when I was five, but I don’t think she knew. She didn’t know what the plot was or what the premise was. I don’t know, maybe she thought it was like an animated movie. I haven’t been in the ocean since. It’s one of the greatest movies, I know. It’s one of the greatest movies ever. Robert Shaw is fantastic. They were all great.”
Apart from this weird experience at The Biltmore Hotel, Slater also once took 20 stitches to his head after his ex-wife allegedly threw a drinking glass at the back of his head in a hotel in Las Vegas.
Jaws is available to rent on Apple TV.
