However, while Paramount+ expected excitement, the images were met with severe backlash from fans. Claiming that Gibson looks exactly the same age as Hall was, during the original show, the images led to widespread criticism.
Paramount+ Dropped First Look Images for Dexter: Original Sin
Following the iconic 8-season run of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter in 2006, Showtime’s crime drama series later birthed a miniseries continuation of the original show, in 2021, Dexter: New Blood. And now, after the success of Hall’s two Dexter projects, Paramount+ with Showtime came up with the idea of churning a prequel series, to showcase the early life of the protagonist.
Greenlighting the 10-episode thriller show Dexter: Original Sin, Paramount+ with Showtime recently unveiled the first look image of the prequel. Taking place 15 years before the events of Michael C. Hall’s 2006 series Dexter, the upcoming prequel starring Patrick Gibson in the titular role will tell the story of the younger serial killer in training.

As per THR reports, the first look image introduced the younger versions of the original show’s core characters: Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, Christian Slater as Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown as Debra Morgan. Apart from that, it has been revealed that the Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips has returned in the same capacity for Dexter: Original Sin, which is yet to have a premiere date.
Michael C. Hall Fans are Upset with Patrick Gibson’s Look in the Prequel
Meanwhile, as the first look images of Dexter: Original Sin hit social media, informing fans about Patrick Gibson taking over the mantle from Michael C. Hall, to play his younger version, it sparked intense criticism. The central issue being the apparent age of Gibson, who is portraying the young version of Dexter Morgan. Considering how the actor appears to be of a similar age to Hall’s Dexter, fans question the premise of a “young” Dexter.

Claiming how the first-look images contradict the idea of the prequel being about young Dexter, fans state that Patrick Gibson appears the same age as Michael C. Hall was in the original show. This led to an intense outcry, with many expressing frustration on social media. Further, the backlash went to a grave extent when netizens began calling Dexter: Original Sin as a reboot rather than a prequel, based on Gibson’s age.
Fans’ dissatisfaction mainly stemmed from a perception that the creative team behind the prequel series failed to capture the essence of a younger Dexter, which was supposed to be the key selling point for the new show. With many anticipating seeing a youthful depiction of Dexter while exploring his early years and development before the events of Dexter (2006), the first-look image seemingly ruined those expectations.
Dexter and Dexter: New Blood are both available on Paramount+.
