George Clooney urged stars to boycott the Beverly Hills Hotel

In an article shared by Deadline, Clooney had requested the Hollywood stars to refrain from giving business to the sultan’s nine luxury hotels. It also included the popular Beverly Hills Hotel. The actor shared that it is a response to the anti-gay laws

Clooney wrote,

“Every single time we stay at or take meetings at or dine at any of these nine hotels we are putting money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery.”

While some celebs joined his campaign, many others do not agree with his ideas. Real Time host Bill Maher talked about Clooney’s campaign on his show. He said that Clooney’s call for a boycott bothered him to a great extent. He said,

“It’s chickens**t tokenism. What about Saudi Arabia? If you really want to get back to them, stop driving, don’t use oil.”

He added,

“It’s Sharia Law, which is some version of the law in most Muslim-majority countries. And if you want to be against that, you know, speak openly and honestly about standing up for liberal principles.”

He joked,

“This idea that the Sultan of Brunei is going over the receipts from the Polo Lounge .. ‘Oh no, we only sold two soups today.’”

Maher said Clooney is smart enough to understand the issues, however, his virtue signaling, will not be very fruitful.

The evidence of the failure of the movement was the presence of stars like Lady Gaga, Margot Robbie, and numerous other celebrities during high-profile fashion events held at that address.

But the campaign was reinstated by George Clooney in 2019, against the anti-gay laws. As the news spread about the date, numerous stars joined the campaign to reinstate the boycott on the hotels owned by Sultan. Sharon Stone, Dustin Lance Black, and Nancy Sinatra are among the few who pledged to not give business to the hotel.
