Ethan Hawke and his ex-wife Uma Thurman have had a great Hollywood career. The Oscar nominees have ventured into several genres and characters that have kept fans intrigued about their projects. However, it hasn’t been limited to on-screen only. Their personal life has also been a subject of discussion among fans, especially after their separation, which was followed by Hawke marrying his children’s nanny.
Talking about the alleged claims of her ex-husband’s infidelity, Thurman got emotional as she addressed the rumors surrounding their split during An interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Ethan Hawke And Uma Thurman’s Separation
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman first met on the set of the 1997 sci-fi thriller Gattaca and soon got married in 1998. They went on to collaborate on two more projects. While the two were believed to be one of the power couples of Hollywood, they announced their separation five years after marriage in 2003.
The couple had two children, Maya Hawke and Levon Hawke, at the time of their separation. They finalized their divorce in 2005. While neither of them stated any particular reason for their divorce, the rumors at the time alleged that the Training Day star cheated on his ex-wife with Ryan Shawhughes, who briefly worked as his children’s nanny.
The rumors only gained momentum after Hawke and Shawhughes started dating publicly and later got married in 2008. However, the Moon Knight star denied such claims during an interview with The Guardian. He said that they started seeing each other about a year after his split from Thurman.
“So when she asked me out, I answered,” he said before adding, “But the truth is by the time Ryan and I were falling in love, it had been a long while since I had employed her.” He claimed that they did not split over anyone’s “infidelity” but due to several other issues, they had in their marriage. Uma Thurman also addressed the same during her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Uma Thurman Got Emptional Talking About Her Split
While the couple announced their split in 2003, they finalized their divorce in 2005. Uma Thurman talked about the split during her appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s chat show soon after finalizing her divorce. “It’s excruciating, it’s weird,” she said as she explained how hard it gets to recover from her divorce every time she runs into her ex-husband.
“You have a nice boyfriend, you know, and your husband’s moving on and the children are doing okay and work’s okay—and then unexpectedly you cross these little ceremonies where it’s all … like a blizzard again. … You’re still so far from your life feeling whole again.”
At the time, she was in a relationship with André Balazs. She also stated that she and Hawke also put in efforts to establish a good relationship for their children. Thurman also said that they were going through a difficult time. “Our marriage failed. I should take full responsibility for the failure of my own marriage,” she said before adding, “Blaming anybody doesn’t make you feel better.”
Unlike public assumptions, Thurman didn’t seem to blame Ryan Shawhughes for her and Hawke’s split. The actress welcomed her third child, Luna Thurman-Busson, with her ex-fiance, Arpad Busson. Hawke also shares two daughters, Clementine Jane Hawke and Indiana Hawke with his wife, Ryan Hawke.
