Godzilla Minus One was one of the big surprises of 2023 as the kaiju film shattered all expectations and delivered a monstrous hit around the world. The film defied the usual norm of the big-budget monster mayhem concept of Godzilla that Hollywood has been relying on for years. With only a $15 million budget, the film managed to pack in spectacle along with genuine human drama.
The director of the film Takashi Yamazaki had expressed his desire to make a Star Wars film during the promotion of the film. It seems that might soon become a reality as Yamazaki recently got in contact with Lucasfilm where he also screened his film at the production company.
Takashi Yamazaki Screens Godzilla Minus One at Lucasfilm
Takashi Yamazaki has become the talk of the town as his recent film Godzilla Minus One became a worldwide hit. Critics and audiences can’t seem to get enough of the fact that the director managed to create a $15 million soaring Godzilla feature with such scale and emotionality. Hollywood has taken notice of the director’s prowess and he may soon find a place in the industry.
Yamazaki has openly expressed his fascination with George Lucas’ Star Wars films (to Slashfilm) and how they made him want to be a filmmaker. He might get to fulfill his desire to direct a Star Wars feature as the director was recently invited to Lucasfilm (according to August Ragone) for a screening of Godzilla Minus One, which was hosted by Dave Filoni.
Yamazaki’s great control and perfect balance of scale and emotion can really bring forward a unique voice to Star Wars. As his film so rightly proved, one does not need $200 million to tell a big-scale story that is anchored by rich characters and relatable themes.

In his praise of Yamazaki’s film, Edwards admitted to feeling jealous while watching the film while also pointing out how the director brought many new elements to the Kaiju feature. Edwards declared the film as the best Godzilla film ever made. he said, (via Cinema Today),
“There were a lot of things that I felt were very new for Godzilla, and I felt jealous the whole time I was watching the movie. This is what a Godzilla movie should be. [Godzilla Minus One] must be mentioned as a candidate for the best Godzilla movie of all time.”
The film is already the highest-rated Kaiju film ever made with a resounding 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes. There are already talks about a sequel to the film and it remains to be seen whether Yamazaki will commit to and provide audiences with another mind-blowing Godzilla film.
