For years Rebel Wilson has been called every name and word associated with ‘fat’ due to her oversized weight. While she did enjoy the ‘fat girl’ roles and was instrumental in spreading body positivity, she wanted to lose weight to be healthier. However, the actress revealed at an appearance on a podcast a few months back that she was unable to lose weight due to legally binding contracts.
Movie contracts, especially the ones that include subsequent sequels often prohibited actors from having an extreme change in their appearances or weight. And so for years while shooting the Pitch Perfect movies, Wilson had to endure loads of mean comments about her weight and appearance.
Rebel Wilson Was Unable To Lose Weight Due To Legal Contract
Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect movies is Rebel Wilson‘s one of the most popular roles ever. Not only did fans love her for her humor but also because Amy defied all notions of weight and societal standards in terms of appearance. While the role gained popularity for the mentioned reasons, Wilson revealed that she received a jolt from a fertility doctor regarding her weight.
In an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the actress revealed that she was asked to lose weight because she wasn’t healthy even though she did not have any major or serious disease. However, the actress was unable to get healthy since she was under a contract that forbade her to have a drastic change in appearance or weight.
“I did wait until Pitch Perfect seemed like it was over. I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight because it was in the contracts for that movie. You can’t lose… I think it’s not more than 10 pounds, or gain more than 10 pounds. You have to kind of stay at the weight. It’s in your contract.”
Not only was she not allowed to lose weight, but she was also stereotyped into playing similar roles.
Rebel Wilson Was Stereotyped Due To Her Weight
It is a tale as old as time, often actors with a certain appearance are stereotyped and offered only a particular kind of role. And so it was with Rebel Wilson as well, who although enjoyed her characters very much, was forced to mostly play the fat funny friend roles, just as she stated on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
“I had been thinking for a while like, ‘Oh, I want to get healthier’. And I was stereotyped in playing that fat, funny friend, which is so hard because I love those roles. I love doing the roles; I love those characters. But then I did want to do more things, but I felt like being the bigger girl, you’re just more pigeonholed.”
And so, fast nearing her 40s, the actress decided to lose weight, not because she was fat-shamed and called mean names, but solely because she wanted to be a healthier version of herself.
