Call of Duty is an age-old franchise, and there was a time when it was known for some very specific things. The most important of those things was the cinematic experience that this franchise provided. The fact that, at that time, this was one series that did this and stood out was enough to make it as successful as it became.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare took this a step further by giving fans an incredibly inventive multiplayer mode. Besides that, its story was also something incredible; fans everywhere could not get enough of that game. It became such a sensation that fans still remember their time with it very fondly, but some say Call of Duty has lost steam, especially in the single-player department, and there’s someone who is promising to bring that back.

David Vonderhaar is a person who has left his mark on numerous Call of Duty games, from Call of Duty 3 to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. One can say he is one of the people who shaped how Call of Duty’s multiplayer worked over the years.

On the other hand, Call of Duty games that were well-known for their incredibly well-designed and exciting campaign modes have now gone downhill. Especially when it comes to the story mode. Many fans are still dissatisfied with the fact that the retelling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had a very short single-player campaign that was also not worth investing time in.

Vonderhaar, who primarily worked with Treyarch, suggests that he has decided to retire very soon. There were some plans about going on a long drive in his EV and enjoying life to the fullest for at least a year. But after he left Activision, something came along that pulled him right back in.

This means he is now going to develop a brand-new game for NetEase; to do so, he has founded a studio called Bulletfarm. And he is now working on a game that he says would be a more intimate and relatable experience than Call of Duty titles.

He suggested that his game would have an emphasis on co-op play and would have a passion for rich characters. This indicates that Bulletfarm Studios is currently hard at work on a first-person game with a very detailed story mode.

The above statement is missing the word “shooter” for a reason. He never suggested that the game would be a shooter; in fact, he made it clear that the game that he aspires to make is not going to be all about shooting as many bullets as possible, but his new game is not about shooting.

Instead, this game would be about discovery, exploration, building connections, and finding relationships between things. This game definitely sounds like a mashup of the games that Naughty Dog makes. Fans will find out exactly what this game is once Bulletfarm Studios decides to reveal it.

People have been trying to redefine these games for a while now

While the thought that David Vonderhaar has is incredibly noble and this game sounds interesting enough, there have been developers who have tried redefining first-person games before. For one Tango Gameworks developer, a game called Ghostwire Tokyo gave players various magic powers instead of guns.

On the other hand, Immortals of Aveum by Ascendant Studios also did something similar, swapping guns with a bunch of magic powers. None of these games broke any ground, though. Let’s see how Bulletfarm changes things.
