Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, despite being amazing actors, starred only in two films together, Mr. And Mrs. Smith and By The Sea. By The Sea was both written and directed by Angelina Jolie. And the way things went on between the fictional couple in the film, people couldn’t help but wonder if the film had any links to reality. The actress opened up about this and recalled how their onscreen fights took a toll on others involved.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt starred in By The Sea as a couple facing trouble in their marriage. In an interview with DGA, Angelina Jolie stated how challenging it was to argue with Pitt, despite the fact that it was all fictional. She went on to add that things got so out of hand, the crew around them could relate to a child feeling awkward and out of place during their parents’ fight.

“I’d be directing myself and him in a scene where we’re having a fight, and I’d be pulling out the parts [of him] that have an aggression toward me or when you’re frustrated with each other—it was very heavy. We kept joking that all of the crew felt like they were living in a house where the parents were fighting and you don’t know where to stand or where to look.”

It sure would have been pretty awkward to see that in real life! No wonder fans thought there was a hidden meaning behind the film.

Why Did Angelina Jolie Make By The Sea?

Jolie and Pritt came into each others’ lives through their work, and perhaps By The Sea was Jolie’s way of trying to relive those moments. In a podcast interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Maleficent actress stated that she believed this film could be a way to communicate with Pitt.

“We had met working together and we worked together well. I wanted us to do some serious work together…I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate. In some ways it was, and in some ways, we learned things.”

Jolie even stated to Vogue that they called it the “Worst idea” but wanted to look beyond their comfort zones and be raw in their talents.

“We even called it the ‘worst idea.’ As artists, we wanted something that took us out of our comfort zones. Just being raw actors. It’s not the safest idea. But life is short.”

The film, though, went on to bomb at the box office as it was able to make just over $3 million on a budget of $10 million. Unfortunately, the two split just a year after the film’s release. Together, the ex-couple shares six children.
