Six years after The Office ended, rumors circulated that a potential reboot of the sitcom was on the cards after NBCUniversal’s Vice Chairman Bonnie Hammer expressed her want to reboot the series. But The Office showrunner Greg Daniels was less-than-thrilled with the idea of a reboot, as four years after Hammer’s comments, Daniels stated the notion of a reboot is not in his interest.

Instead of resorting to a remake of a beloved IP, which has kind of become the norm for Hollywood, Daniels suggested making a spin-off set in the same universe with new characters. While it appears to be an overall better approach to rekindle the sitcom, this hasn’t got every fan on board.

Fans Might Not Get To Revisit Dunder Mifflin in Greg Daniels’ The Office Spin-off

With Greg Daniels reportedly assembling the room of writers for the new approach to the IP, it appears the upcoming spin-off will deal with a new set of characters in a new office. This means the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company will not be making a return, as Daniels repeatedly stressed he isn’t interested in revisiting the original story with new actors. Per Deadline, showrunner Greg Daniels said the potential plot could include:

“A documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject is a possibility as a premise for a possible Office Universe extension”

While it’s important to note that the spin-off is in very early development, and things could end up going another route, fans of the original show are conflicted about the direction the show is taking.

While Some Are Excited, Some Aren’t Wowed by the Direction the Spin-off Is Heading

Following the impact of the Steve Carell-led show, which ruled the 2000s, some fans aren’t quite on board without the original cast being involved. On the flip side, while many are appeased that it isn’t taking the reboot route that Hammer initially expressed, some are still doubtful if it can touch the bar set by the previous outing, which is still being revisited by fans. But keeping in mind the U.S. version was based on the BBC series of the same name, starring Ricky Gervais, some are optimistic that Greg Daniels can repeat the success of the classic.

With the show reportedly set to deal with a new set of characters, fans will hope to witness a few returning faces, maybe in the form of cameos, as the spin-off appears to be taking place in the same universe. This will not only pull back the fans of the classic to give the spin-off a chance, but it will further help bind the two shows together.
