The anomaly of the Dragon Ball franchise, Dragon Ball GT, has introduced some very interesting notions about the Dragon Ball world. These notions might be interesting, but because they are non-canon, they do not make sense. Despite this, fans still try to make them canon and connect them with the events of Dragon Ball Z.
Dragon Ball GT’s timeline makes it even more difficult for fans to understand the narrative of the series as the events of the anime series take place ten years after Dragon Ball Z. Thus, even though some fans may consider Dragon Ball GT canon, its notions, and theories cannot be taken into account with Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Super timelines.
One such notion of Dragon Ball GT has led fans to scratch their heads. It is about the negative energy used by Shenron that has given the fans some wrong ideas about Goku’s Super Saiyan transformations. In fact, it has also disrupted some major plotlines of the original timeline.
Theory About Negative Energy in the Dragon Ball Universe
The negative Dragon Ball energy was a concept introduced by Old Kai in Dragon Ball Z. This concept focused on the negative energy created whenever a wish was granted by the Dragon Balls. However, the Dragon Balls themselves stored this negative energy and harmlessly released it in the universe over a certain period of time.
The Dragon Ball GT narrative was based around this negative energy, which created seven different Shenrons who played antagonistic roles in the series. Reddit user u/One-Economist-8678 believed that while the narrative of Dragon Ball GT is non-canon, the negative energy within Dragon Balls can be canon.

The user stated that as these negative energies come from the wishes made in a different timeline, it is possible that this negative energy that created evil Shenrons could have some impact on the Dragon Ball Z timeline if the wishes themselves were negative. They could change the dark Dragon Ball energy into positive energy.
Dragon Balls Negative Energy Can Never Be Canon
While the theory sounds intriguing and might have some valid points, it can never be canon. This is because it has never been mentioned in the original stories except for when Old Kai talked about them. These Dragon Balls are controlled by the Guardian of Earth, and the power within them changes multiple times.

Therefore, while it worked greatly with Dragon Ball GT, the concept of negative Dragon Ball energy would have no importance in the canonical narratives.

These Dragon Balls have been used for almost everything. They have explained multiple concepts, like the Super Saiyan God transformation or Goku’s return from the dead.
And while they can be used for villainous endeavors, they themselves cannot be negative. It would hurt the entire timeline of the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super Universe and indirectly disrupt the narrative of these timelines.
