Saying Woody Allen has been a controversial figure in Hollywood would be an understatement and with his latest movie around the corner, the Oscar-winning director recently reflected on the drama. Struggling to get his work financed following the stern allegations that have surrounded him for decades, which tanked his reputation in the US, the director stated that he finds cancel culture silly.
Back in the late 90s, the acclaimed filmmaker was accused of s*xually abusing his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow. While the charges were eventually dropped after a thorough investigation, the allegations resurfaced in the wake of the #MeToo movement, leading to the director garnering heavy backlash from fans.
Woody Allen Expressed His Issue With the #Metoo Movement and Cancel Culture
Even though Woody Allen previously advocated for the #MeToo movement, he claimed that when the situation is not revolving around the issue of unfairness to women, “it’s silly”. Considering his reputation in Hollywood suffered a major blow in the wake of this movement, resulting in the director struggling to get his recent films financed, the Antz Star added,
“It’s silly, you know, when it’s not really a feminist issue When it’s being too extreme in trying to make it into an issue when, in fact, most people would not regard it as any kind of offensive situation.”
Further diving into the matter, Allen shared a similar viewpoint about the cancel culture and on asked about its impact on his life, the director claimed, “I just find that all so silly. I don’t think about it.” Although Allen admitted that things have changed for him, the difference is not from cancel culture but how films are presented nowadays.
