Zoe Saldana’s tenure in the MCU recently ended with the final film in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Her role as Gamora is one of the main anchors of the trilogy and the various relationships she had with other characters, especially Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill and Karen Gillan’s Nebula were two of the strongest emotional strongholds of the series.

The third and final film proved to be a bittersweet goodbye to the characters and within themselves where each of them went in their own separate ways.

The sisterhood between Gamora and Nebula with the addition of their tormenting father Thanos was a large narrative arc in The Infinity Saga. The aftermath and the reconciliation of the differences between the sisters was something we didn’t get to see much in the MCU. Saldana had expressed her desire for such a complex exploration recently.

Zoe Saldana recently reflected on the ten years of playing Gamora in the MCU and the emotional journey that she and her cast mates have taken on all these years with their characters. In a new episode of Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Disney+, she further talked about her unfulfilled desire of wanting to do a Gamora-Nebula spin-off film. She said (via The Direct),

“I would have loved to have just seen a spin-off based on that sisterhood. It’s so complex. It’s so controversial. It’s also so relatable in a sense that, not me by personal experience, but knowing that there are siblings out there that have had troubled lives at home, and managed to survive because of their kinship, because of their brotherhood or their sisterhood.”

It would have been interesting to see more of the bond between the sisters and a proper reconciliation after their abusive father’s death. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 provided some heartwarming moments between the two and a proper sendoff for the rag-tag team of misfits even though we didn’t get to witness Saldana’s dream project.

Zoe Saldana Was Proud of the Bittersweet Ending in Her Last Film as Gamora

Zoe Saldana reflected on the bittersweet ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and how it was the perfect way to say goodbye to the beloved characters. She also praised how James Gunn did not follow the route of a forced romance with her character and Peter Quill. She told The Hollywood Reporter,

“It was a bittersweet decision, obviously. I wanted to know that in the final chapter, Gamora stays on and finds a way to become a Guardian again. But this felt like the right way to end things for her, because of what she had been through. At the end of the day, any multiverse that she would’ve come from, she was still going to have the same experience with Thanos [Josh Brolin], and she was still gonna have the same guilt and the same trauma. So she finally found solace with the Ravagers, and she felt more open than she had ever been.

I think the whole thing with Peter bothered her, because even though she had no recollection of who he was, she had a sense that it must have been special. And I appreciated that takeaway because it kind of gave us the hope that if the Guardians seek help again from the Ravagers, maybe Gamora and Peter will find a way back into each other’s lives, even if it’s just as friends.”

Fans can experience the Guardians’ last mission as a team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The making of the film, the experiences of the cast, and saying their emotional goodbyes can also be seen in the episode of the documentary series Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Both projects can be streamed on Disney+.
