There are a lot of things to be said about the city of Los Angeles when it comes to its significance in the world of TV shows and cinema in general. Sugar, the new mystery series on Apple TV+, starring Colin Farrell, does a great job of capturing the essence of the City of Angels, especially the ugly underbelly. In this atmospheric backdrop, Farrell assumes a new enigmatic persona, embodying the essence of the city’s moody ambience.

In a clip from the upcoming series called Sugar, John Sugar dispels a common myth about the town he now calls home. “People think L.A. is an up-all-night kinda town, but it really isn’t,” he says via voiceover as he drives through the city in a classic convertible.

“After midnight, except the club kids along the strip or the crawlers down in Hollywood, everyone’s in bed. You can come and go as you like.”

The Southern Californian setting was one of the primary factors that attracted Colin Farrell to the series, as he tells Entertainment Weekly.

“I knew it was shooting in L.A., and no matter how much you might love what you’re doing, you get tired of leaving home,”“So to shoot this for five or six months in L.A. and have the city be such a prominent character in it as well was really cool.”

Sugar comes to Los Angeles with a distinct outsider perspective, something that’s further amplified and enhanced by Fernando Meirelles, the Oscar-nominated Brazilian filmmaker best known for the classic films City of God and The Two Popes. Naturally, there is a lot of hype and anticipation considering the pedigree of the filmmaker.

“He just came to L.A. with this curiosity. He had no bias, he had no knowledge of it. He was just really curious and he found it head-scratching. I’ve lived in L.A. for 20 years, and I also find it head-scratching, but just by virtue of living here for two decades, I’m more used to it, and of course, a little bit more jaded by it. But Fernando was like a kid.”

Farrell thinks L.A. is the perfect setting for a character like Sugar to explore since he describes the detective as “a keen observer of human behavior.”

“There’s nowhere really more fascinating in so many different ways in the world than this city,” Farrell notes. “It’s so kaleidoscopic.”

Tip the world on its side and everything loose lands in Los Angeles. We all have our secrets. Even me. Especially me.”

Sugar premieres Friday, April 5, on Apple TV+ and it is certain to be a hit judging by the premise and Colin Farrell’s acting prowess.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Reeves is expanding The Batman universe to explore other villains. Reeves is currently in discussions with writers and directors to develop movies, not just series, centered around various characters from Batman’s Rogue’s Gallery. These projects, which include characters like the Scarecrow, Clayface, and Professor Pyg, are in the early stages of development.

Reeves is plotting more. The filmmaker is meeting with writers and directors to build out movies — yes movies, not just series — focused on Batman rogue’s gallery, both established and more obscure, with characters ranging from the Scarecrow to Clayface to Professor Pyg. All those projects are in the very early stages of gestation.”

The Batman has been delayed to October 2nd, 2026, so fans will have to wait a very long time for the highly anticipated sequel. We’ll have to see if the movie will be worth the wait in the end.
