Margot Robbie Brings Her Signature Barbie Charm to Ocean’s Prequel

When an Ocean’s 11 prequel was announced in the summer of ’22, all we knew was that Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were going to be joining the star-studded ensemble of thieves and shrewd anti-heroes. But filmmaker Jay Roach, who will be helming the project, has fresh and rather surprising news at that, for fans of the franchise.

In his latest interview with Lindsey Bahr, the Bombshell director confirmed that though the prequel will be set in a 1960s European backdrop, the central storyline won’t just feature a riveting heist, it will also put a “love story” in the spotlight. And it looks like fans have Robbie to thank for this idea of a romantic escapade.

“Margot brought it to me as a kind of old-fashioned love story slash adventure disguised as a heist. It is a heist movie still, but it’s very much a love story.”

Besides the 2018 spinoff, Steven Soderberg’s Ocean’s trilogy with an all-male ensemble cast has never cared much for any amorous elements, let alone a grand love story. The George Clooney-led films exclusively focused on notorious thefts and baffling crimes so the prospect of a romantic plot is certainly an unconventional one as far as the franchise goes, but it’d still be interesting to see how it all unfurls in the movie. Besides, a little tweak in the routine isn’t going to hurt, now is it?

The film is going to take place in 1962 Monte Carlo with Gosling and Robbie beckoning trouble to take them on a dicey adventure. While they haven’t put a pin on what exactly the heist would be, Roach, 65, did say that The Monaco Grand Prix [as] the backdrop, and there’s a big famous shipping magnate who has a yacht.”

While the prequel is not going to be a reboot, it is very much set in the same universe as its fellow Ocean’s films. As for the star cast, no other characters and members have been disclosed besides the Barbie duo. Production, according to the sources, is likely to commence somewhere around the end of this month, however, no release date has been attached to the project yet.
