Though Charles Melton appears to be extremely attractive, there is more to him than meets the eye. Last year, he co-starred with Julianne Moore & Natalie Portman in Todd Haynes’ drama May December, which launched the awards campaign for his acclaimed performance.
Since then, the Riverdale star has been nominated and even won numerous awards. He received a Gotham Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance and was given a nomination for the Golden Globe & Critics Choice Awards. From his breakthrough performance in the hit TV series Riverdale to his role in May December, it would not be false to say that he is rapidly establishing himself as a gifted actor to watch.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actor, 33, spoke about his ambition and drive to succeed in the competitive world of acting.
The Rise of Charles Melton: From Riverdale’s Reggie Mantle to May December’s Joe Yoo
Being active in the industry since 2010, Charles Melton has never been afraid to dream big. In his mind, he has even “tried not to set any limits” because he knows he will become entangled in boundaries “outside of me”. The actor revealed the following to Vanity Fair:
“I’ve always been a big dreamer, and I’ve tried not to set any limits in my mind because I’ll get caught up in the limits outside of me. I’m always seeking. My ambition is always driving me.”
And it has, as Melton’s career keeps getting better with every new endeavor. Many critics have praised and given glowing reviews for his performance in Todd Haynes’ drama flick May December. Prior to that, he had been working hard to establish himself on television, having portrayed Reggie Mantle in the Riverdale series from 2017 to 2023.
But Melton is not going to rest on his laurels. After so many awards and nominations, he is unsure of what comes next. However, he is more focused after his May December’s experience. Natalie Portman, his co-star, said of him:
“There’s been this democratization of creativity where gatekeepers have been demoted and everyone can make things.”
He is driven to keep pushing the envelope and challenging himself as an actor, and he has an amazing work ethic and a love for what he does. And it appears Melton has no intention of stopping.
Camila Mendes: It Was ‘Hard’ To Work With Her Ex Charles Melton in Riverdale
Dating a coworker can be difficult, especially if the relationships do not work out. That could spell trouble for you. Charles Melton and his co-star Camila Mendes of Riverdale dated for a year from 2018 to 2019. In 2021, their romance was briefly reignited once again.
Mendes discussed the ups and downs of the relationship in an interview with Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast (via Us Weekly).
“We dated for a year and then broke up for about a year and then got back together for about a year.”
Mendes revealed that, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, they rekindled their relationship while filming the sixth season of the show. Lockdown restrictions forced the cast to remain in Vancouver, where the show was being filmed, so they decided to give their relationship another go.
“Obviously, right when it happened, it’s hard and it’s emotional. It’s the worst. But it’s hard because the timing of the show…Anytime we started to hook up off set and knew that something was brewing, our characters would start dating. But they didn’t know. No one knew. The writers would just naturally make it happen.”
The relationship between Melton and Mendes is now firmly a thing of the past. Everything seems to be well now, whether it is on or off-screen. On the work front, as per Variety, Charles Melton is slated to co-star with Elizabeth Olsen in Todd Solondz’s upcoming dark comedy, Love Child.
Both Riverdale & May December are streaming on Netflix.
