Recently appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Jack Whitehall shared how ‘Elsie’ was both his and his girlfriend Roxy Horner’s choice of name for their baby girl, but it wasn’t until a lot of struggle before the pair landed the name.

“To be fair, it was a little bit of a battle. I basically had a month before the baby arrived where there was a lot of me trying to spike inappropriate name suggestions of Roxy’s. There was one–this was like, a couple of weeks before the baby arrived. She came into the bedroom, Roxy, and she was like, ‘Okay, I was thinking if it’s a girl: Phoenix.’ I was thinking, ‘Over my dead body.’”

Although Horner found the name ‘cute and sweet’, Whitehall, on the other hand, found the name ‘Phoenix’ like one of a stripper. That brought his girlfriend to a very suspicious question: How would he know that? Laughing, the comedian continued to share:

“I was like, ‘Umm. I don’t know, I’ve never been to a strip club in my life. But we should probably do some due diligence if we’re gonna call our child this name.’ So, I was like, ‘Can we Google it please?’ She was like, ‘Google what?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know, type in top 10 stripper names?’”

Thus was the situation: hilariously awkward, with the pair on the point of searching to confirm if ‘Phoenix’ was indeed a stripper name. But that was when the original bomb was dropped:

“So then we have this weird moment where we’re at home, she’s got all the baby name books out and I’m on Google, typing in ‘Top 10 Stripper Names’. [Laughs] There is a website with the top ten stripper names, and to be fair to her, Phoenix was not on it. Do you know what No. 1 was? Roxy! [Face palms laughing]”

That was the story of how Jack Whitehall ended up accidentally and indirectly insulting his girlfriend, Roxy Horner!

Jack Whitehall Was Worried Of Being ‘A Monster’ At His Baby Girl’s Birth

During the same interview, Jack Whitehall then revealed just how big of a crier he is.

“I am a very big crier. I cry at anything and everything–funerals, weddings. It’s really bad.”

Continuing, he shared the story of how he was watching an episode of Tipping Point, a few weeks before the baby was due, when he got all emotional as one woman won the jackpot that could finally help her pay for a flight to New Zealand to visit her sister. Sharing his experience, he said:

“And, honestly, I’m watching it, and she wins the jackpot, and I’m like Paul Gascoigne, Italia 90. Just waterworks, like, undignified levels of crying.”

But that’s when the sudden epiphany hit him: what if he didn’t cry this way at his daughter’s birth?!

“And then I have this awful thought: I was like, ‘If I’m crying at an episode of Tipping Point, and then I don’t cry at the birth of my daughter, [then] I’m a monster!’”

More cautious about what he watched on TV then more than ever, Whitehall refused to watch anything emotional until the birth of his baby girl to avoid any unwanted situations. However, thankfully, everything turned out in his favor in the end.

“Obviously, in the end, I had nothing to worry about because my baby girl arrived and I was just like–it was like the most emotional episode of Repair Shop to the power of Mufasa dying in Lion King. [Imitates sobbing] I [was] handed this baby and the bomb was like instant.”

Ever heard of a comedian who cries this hard? Yeah, well, Jack Whitehall doesn’t mind being the first one!
