Euphoria star Jacob Elordi recently replaced Andrew Garfield as the Frankenstein’s monster in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. The Amazing Spider-Man actor has a cult following of fans who took to X and expressed their discontent with Elordi. As the initial backlash has died down a bit, Elordi finally opens up about his excitement for collaborating with del Toro, the God of monsters.
The 26-year-old actor has been making some amazing choices with his roles, as seen in Euphoria, Priscilla, and Saltburn. Meanwhile, after enjoying critical and commercial success in previous roles, Garfield did not appear in any movies or shows in 2023.
Jacob Elordi Confirms His Role In Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein
Jacob Elordi‘s casting in Guillermo del Toro‘s Frankenstein was officially announced through a press release. It was reported that Andrew Garfield, who was initially cast in the role, stepped down due to scheduling conflicts caused by strike postponements (via Deadline). Elordi recently spoke about his new role during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
During the show, The Kissing Booth actor discussed his BAFTA-nominated role in Saltburn and his role in Euphoria. When Jimmy Fallon asked him about the Frankenstein role, Elordi shared his excitement about being part of the project and expressed his admiration for director Del Toro. Elordi shared that the Pinocchio director was a kind, sincere, and brilliant man. Jacob Elordi shared with The Tonight Show:
“Yeah, I’m playing Frankenstein’s creature… for Guillermo, who is the God of monsters. He’s the kindest man, and he’s so sincere. He’s brilliant.”
In 2023, Deadline reported that Oscar Isaac will play the role of Victor Frankenstein, and Mia Goth will also appear in the film. The new press release also confirmed other actors in the film, including Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery. Del Toro partnered with Netflix for the film, where he had successfully created projects like Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Pinocchio.
Frankenstein is Del Toro’s passion project and he will also be writing the screenplay for the film. He’s also producing the film alongside his earlier collaborator J. Miles Dale. It remains unclear whether Del Toro will stay true to Mary Shelley’s periodic setting or adapt the story to modern times.
Jacob Elordi Faced Awful Fan Backlash For Replacing Andrew Garfield
Fans on X were not kind to Jacob Elordi when they first heard the news. Andrew Garfield’s fanbase expressed their disappointment and frustration with the decision. Hurtful comments called Elordi’s casting “the biggest downgrade” and even stated that he would never be as good as Garfield. Other comments were more disappointed while sharing no particular resentment toward the Deep Water actor. Fan reactions read:

However, some fans also came in support of Elordi. Many shared their excitement for his casting, while others defended him against the negative comments. One fan commented that the 2 Hearts actor was going to “eat that role up.” Another fan responded to the criticism that he was too pretty by pointing out that Elordi’s height would help him effectively play the monster.

Garfield is yet to comment on his replacement from the film. The Tick, Tick… Boom! actor will be next seen in the film We Live in Time alongside Florence Pugh. Elordi also has two upcoming releases which are in the post-production, On Swift Horses and Oh, Canada.
