Now that the third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy series has made it to the big screens, James Gunn’s tenure with Marvel Studios has officially come to a tearful end. With his MCU denouement in place, the filmmaker is now back to running DC Studios along with Peter Safran as the superhero franchise goes through a major overhaul under the co-CEOs’ reign.

However, while Gunn might have said goodbye to Marvel with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as his last project, it looks like he won’t be parting ways with the space adventurers anytime soon. Or at least one of them.

When Worlds Collide – James Gunn Set to Bring in A GoTG Actor to DCU

It’s barely been three days since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hit the cinemas and the threequel’s global accumulation has already catapulted to $119.7 million. The film has been hyped up to be an impeccable feat, with James Gunn adamant about not following in the footsteps of Hollywood’s disastrous trilogies. Not to mention, the Chris Pratt-led galactic venture marks Gunn’s last hurrah with Marvel Studios. But it seems that the DC co-chief is ready to bring some of that MCU magic to the rival franchise, a last order of business perhaps, before he leaves Marvel for good.

After extricating Henry Cavill‘s Superman from the revamped DCU, Gunn rendered Clark Kent’s slot open for younger blood, or so it seems. While it is unknown who would be donning the cape in Superman: Legacy that the 56-year-old director is going to shepherd, one thing’s for sure – a Guardians of the Galaxy star will certainly grace the project with their presence.

During Twitter Q&A, when a fan asked The Suicide Squad director if any of the Guardians would appear in his forthcoming Superman movie, Gunn answered with a simple “yes.” However, it is unknown whether a single actor or mor3 from the troupe would be joining forces with DC. Neither do we know if the role/s in question would be any major ones or mere cameos. Nonetheless, it’s still refreshing to know that Gunn would be reuniting with a Guardian(s) in the foreseeable future.

All We Know About Superman: Legacy

The upcoming Superman film is incredibly close to Gunn’s heart so it’s no surprise that he’s not only directing the project but also overlooking its script.

With Cavill no longer serving as the emblem of hope, the lead role of Superman is yet to be filled in by another actor, who, as the director said, would be “younger than in his 40s.” While no further details have been divulged on the same, a number of names have spawned as a result of intense fan speculation. From Percy Jackson actor Logan Lerman to Euphoria star Jacob Elordi, there have been countless such conjectures, but in vain; Gunn has been quick to debunk such rumors and he also very clearly stated that his primary focus at the moment isn’t the casting but the script instead.

As for the plot, Safran, who produced Shazam! 2, revealed that Superman: Legacy isn’t going to be an “origin story.” As described by the DCU co-CEO, the storyline will focus on –

“Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way in a world that thinks kindness is old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy will release on July 11, 2025.
