The Marvel Cinematic Universe is as huge as it can get with countless superheroes and superhero teams and the many iterations of them in the comics as well as on the big screen. Yet the Avengers have remained the top-tier team in both formats, closely followed by the band of space misfits, the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Both teams have often found themselves pitted against each other in one or the other fan discussions. Although there have been a few instances where both teams went head to head, there hasn’t been a clear winner. Yet James Gunn, writer-director of the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, reckons that the Guardians would be a clear winner in such a fight.

Both the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers are incredible teams with some of the mightiest heroes in the universe. In the comics and the movie, both have teamed up quite often to defeat some of the deadliest villains of the Marvel Universe.

But when it comes to fighting each other, fans mostly have been unable to come to a conclusive answer as to who would win. Both teams have incredibly powerful beings, the Guardians who also have the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, aka Gamora, while the Avengers have the Hulk.

It must be noted that even though both teams have also interchanged some members over the years, this debate is usually between the original Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow) and the most prevalent version of the GOTG (Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket Racoon, Groot).

And so, while most fans are on a dead-end on the subject, James Gunn thinks his Guardians of the Galaxy are much more powerful than the Avengers. In an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Gunn remarked,

“Listen, I always thought that the Guardians would beat the s**t out of the Avengers easily. Like, it’s just they’re from outer space. They have technology that is pretty advanced, so it would be hard to beat them.”

Even though it is true that the Guardians have some impressive tech and are defenders of the Galaxy, Iron Man has nanotech, which puts Avengers above them. And most fans who think the Avengers would be clear winners were quick to troll the now-DC helmer.

The Guardians of the Galaxy

The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy went head-to-head in an episode of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, there was no clear winner when they realized there had been a misunderstanding. Meanwhile, in What If…? Infinity: Guardians of the Galaxy #1, the Guardians proved to be too much for the Avengers, and they were easily defeated.

Yet fans believe the Avengers are mightier, stronger, and fiercer than the Guardians (see Reddit) and that Thor and Hulk alone are enough to overpower the space misfits if they ever get to fight. After Gunn’s comments went viral on the internet, this is how many fans responded:

Well, the fans aren’t exactly wrong seeing the way Thor literally took over the entire Guardians team in Love & Thunder and how Hulk even defeated the entire Avengers in Avengers #3 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

But seeing the research James Gunn has done on the Guardians, he might even be right to some extent. And so while it is basically impossible to know which team is stronger and mightier since it is a matter of perspectives, to each his own!
