DC chiefs James Gunn and Peter Saffran’s DCU seem to going in full swing as the the duo recently hired The Vampire Diaries actress and playwright Ana Nogueira to write the script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film would explore the character and would be based on the namesake comic book run created by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Gunn announced his slate of DC films starting with his own Superman: Legacy earlier this year. The franchise is set to be a soft reboot for the DC universe, with storylines of the Snyder-verse slowly being done away with. After hiring Nogueria, Gunn also reportedly expressed wanting to hire a female director to handle Supergirl.
James Gunn’s New And Improved DCU
Before James Gunn and Peter Saffran were hired to be the new heads of DC Studios, the DC film franchise was a bit directionless. The DC Extended Universe as it was called back then began with 2013’s Man of Steel, which starred Henry Cavill as Superman and was directed by Zack Snyder.
After the success of the film, Snyder returned for the sequel Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hinted at an eventual team-up of DC’s superheroes in a Justice League film. While Snyder directed the majority of the Justice League as well, polarizing reviews for the Batman V Superman film prompted WB studio to make some creative changes.
The result was a case of mismanagement and tonally conflicting films such as the Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam. While many of the films were commercially successful, fans were not satisfied with the films. There were attempts to bring back classic characters such as Henry Cavill and even Michael Keaton, but they all fell flat.
Warner Bros. finally hired James Gunn, who directed The Suicide Squad and created the show Peacemaker, to head DC Studios along with Peter Saffran. Gunn announced a new batch of films that would soft reboot the franchise and pave the way for new stories. He announced his slate of films and TV shows under ‘Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters’.
Ana Nogueira Joins The DCU As The Screenwriter Of Supergirl
Among the films announced by James Gunn’s DCU is the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Recently, it was announced that noted actress and playwright Ana Nogueira had joined the film as a screenwriter. She had initially been roped in by DC Studios to work on a solo Supergirl film as a potential spin-off for The Flash.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the project never materialized. Hence, Nogueira was re-hired to rework her script to suit the needs of James Gunn’s new universe. While there have been no other updates regarding the project, Gunn was rumored to have been eying to hire a female director to handle the film.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is said to be based on the popular comic book series of the same name that ran from 2021 to 2022. The series was created by Tom King and Bilquis Evely and followed the adventures of Kara Zor-El along with Krypto the Superdog in space. The series was widely appreciated upon its release.
Talking about the film and Supergirl’s character, Gunn mentioned,
“Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.”
Gunn has also reportedly hired Ana Nogueira to develop more projects for the DCU and has offered a full-time writing deal.
