Since taking over as DC head, James Gunn has proved that he can transcend all the negative noise surrounding his controversial decisions by concentrating solely on the future of the franchise. Among his various ambitious ideas for DC, his marquee project Superman: Legacy is currently the most discussed film that will initiate the reboot of the franchise.
Gunn has also proved that he is a master at creating hype and anticipation through the casting process for the film. With David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Rachel Brosnahan already locked in for Superman, Lex Luthor, and Lois Lane, Gunn has now officially moved on to Supergirl, for which the auditions have commenced. According to sources, the field has now been narrowed down to two actors, one of whom is a popular face for her role in House of the Dragon.
Milly Alcock Could Be James Gunn’s Supergirl
James Gunn is moving on to the next stage of casting for his highly anticipated DC film Superman: Legacy. With David Corenswet confirmed as the franchise’s Superman following Henry Cavill’s exit, the hunt for the superhero’s famous cousin Supergirl is now in full swing. According to inside information from the DC camp, auditions and screen tests have been underway, and the choices have now been narrowed down to two prospects.
One of the stars who looks to stand a good chance of bagging the role is Milly Alcock. Game of Thrones fans will recognize the celebrity after her successful stint in the spin-off series House of the Dragon, in which she played Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, if Alcock is initiated into the Gunn’s DC, she will play a pivotal part in moving the DCU narrative forward including headlining her own film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow which will reportedly go on the floors after Superman: Legacy.
James Gunn’s Challenge For Superman: Legacy
The head of DC James Gunn is already working on overdrive to create a new and improved look for the franchise and its films. Using the expertise that he gained from Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Gunn aims to take DC to the next level. One of the biggest moves that elicited mixed opinions across fandoms was the ousting of Henry Cavill as Superman and the subsequent casting of David Corenswet.
A lot of these decisions that Gunn has made is seen as an effort on his part to reinvent the franchise starting with Superman: Legacy. According to the filmmaker, the movie will be a completely fresh take on the Man of Steel, which will be directed by Gunn himself. The DC head confessed to The Hollywood Reporter that he was not always enthusiastic to take on the celebrated superhero and his legacy owing to the challenges involved with exploring an iconic character.
“It’s easier to take a character nobody knows, like the Guardians, or Peacemaker, and then do whatever you want with them. People in every single country in the world know the story of Superman. How can I make it different from the movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far?. So it just took me some time to try to figure it out”.
Gunn further added that true to the film’s title, his wish was to make a sincere superhero movie that will respect the legacy of Superman as portrayed in the earlier films by Zack Snyder. After Cavill’s exit as Superman, a lot will rest on Corenswet to live up to the reputation of DC’s biggest icon.
