The DC Studios head, James Gunn, has found the Supergirl for the new DCU. The character, who is set to headline one of the films under the new DC Universe Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is expected to make her DCU debut with the David Corenswet starrer Superman: Legacy. Recent reports have suggested that the studio has conducted screen tests for the role, with Meg Donnelly and Milly Alcock being the frontrunners.
And the latter has landed the role in the DCU. While Donnelly may have lost this opportunity, there are now speculations that she may still have a chance to join the new DCU.
Milly Alcock Cast As Supergirl in James Gunn’s DCU
James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, revealed several projects under the first chapter of the new DC Universe, one of them being Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. And Milly Alcock, known for portraying Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO drama House of the Dragon, has secured the role of Supergirl in the DCU.
Gunn took to Instagram to confirm the news and praised the actress for her exceptional performance in House of the Dragon and her versatile auditions and screen tests for the role of Supergirl in the DCU. He also said that he is “incredibly excited” about the Australian actress joining the DCU.
“I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon, but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl,” he mentioned in the caption of the post. While the character is set to feature in her own solo film, reports also suggested that Kara Zor-El would potentially make her DCU debut in Superman: Legacy.
According to Deadline, she has beat actresses like Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly to win the role. However, new speculations suggest that Donnelly, having previously voiced Supergirl, might still have an opportunity to join the DCU.
Meg Donnelly Could Still Join James Gunn’s DCU
Along with Milly Alcock, Meg Donnelly was also reported to be one of the leading contestants to land the role of Supergirl in the DCU. The actress was expected to win the role by many, considering she has voiced the character in the animated DC films Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One.
However, with James Gunn officially confirming the casting for the DC superhero, suggestions are made that The Winchesters actress could still get a second chance to join the DC Universe. Fans are expecting the actress to take on the role of other DC superheroes, like Stargirl and Power Girl.

The specualtions are made based on Nicholas Hoult’s casting, who had auditioned for the role of Kal-El but has been cast as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. While Donnelly’s future in the DCU is still uncertain, the actress is set to reprise her voice role as Supergirl in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One, which is expected to release this year.
Superman Legacy is slated to release on July 11, 2025.
