Things hadn’t been looking well for the DCU ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran got tapped as the new co-CEOs and co-chairmen of DC Studios–at least according to most fans’ perspectives. And now, with Gunn’s confirmed casting choices being announced for the upcoming Superman: Legacy every now and then, which will mark a new era of the DC Universe, fans are expecting even less from the franchise.
As per recent reports, James Gunn is reported to have cast Venezuelan actress and singer, María Gabriela de Faría to play the villain, Angela Spica aka The Engineer, in Superman: Legacy. And as expected, this is not being received well by the fans.

María Gabriela de Faría To Play The Villain In Superman: Legacy
Since James Gunn is going for a complete reboot for a whole new era of the DC Universe which will be initiated with Superman: Legacy, fans have been expecting to bring some new and worthy talent to the franchise. However, his recent casting choice for the villain in the film is anything but fine with the fans.
According to a recent report by @Deadline on X, Venezuelan actress cum singer María Gabriela de Faría is set to play the villain Angela Spica aka The Engineer in Superman: Legacy.

Angela Spica, in DC Comics, is one of the many characters on the villain team whose powers come from the nanotechnology built into her body. First introduced back in 1999 in The Authority vol.1 #1 by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, she is reportedly the second character from DC to bear the name of ‘The Engineer’.
While David Corenswet cast as Clark Kent aka Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane aka Kent’s love interest didn’t receive too strong reviews from fans, this one particular casting for the villain in the film has gotten fans outraged because of one too many reasons.
James Gunn’s Casting Choices Are Not Sitting Well With Fans
Although James Gunn would have expected fans to side up with him for his whole new reboot of the DCU, that hardly seems the case after María Gabriela de Faría got cast as the villain.
Not only do fans not want the actress best known for her lead role in Lionsgate’s The Exorcism of God, but they also believe that the filmmaker’s choice for playing Angela Spica is nothing short of taken from the bottom of the barrel.
Commenting on the X post by @Deadline to share just how unhappy they are with Gunn’s choices for the reboot, here’s what fans have to say:
So Gunn is going for bottom of the barrel cheapest per value here

Judging from the massive uproar from fans that this new casting choice update has attracted, things don’t look all too well for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy. However, the tables might as well turn at the last minute, for all we know.
Superman: Legacy is confirmed to hit the theatres on the 11th of July, 2025.
