The Marvel Cinematic Universe has numerous famous franchises under its umbrella and that includes the beloved Guardians of The Galaxy trilogy. It is focused on sci-fi, so realism is never the main draw for the movies, but there are many things fans have come to love about the franchise. Now it appears the third film seems to have been dealt another big blow after a 2-time Visual Effects Oscar winner chose a movie made with 5% of its budget over Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3.

In case you were not aware, Richie Baneham secured his first Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2009 for the movie Avatar. Remarkably, he achieved another win in the same category last year for the long-awaited follow-up, Avatar: The Way of Water. The director of both films, James Cameron, had the honor of presenting Baneham with this prestigious accolade as well.

While speaking to BBC about this year’s Oscars nominees, Richie Baneham expressed a “soft spot” for the visual effects nominee Godzilla Minus One, “because it’s such a small movie“.

This is a big blow for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because the film had a budget of $250 million, while Godzilla Minus One had approximately $12 million for its budget.

It is to be noted that this marks James Gunn’s final opportunity to win that particular award, as both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 were nominated in their respective years but did not secure the win for the same category. We will have to wait and see if the film will end up winning this time around.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 provided an emotional sendoff to everyone’s favorite characters in the epic space saga. The film particularly gave purpose to beloved characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Drax The Destroyer.

The ending of the movie saw Rocket Raccoon discovering a whole colony of raccoons, expressing his desire to take care of them. Gamora returned to her own family while acknowledging that Star-Lord isn’t a bad person. Nebula, Drax, and Groot also received appropriate endings. However, fans might not have seen the last of these iconic characters on the silver screen.
