DC’s latest superhero flick Blue Beetle had a lot going on for it. But will the character as it exists now come to the DCU? Being the first DC release under the supervision of its new CEO James Gunn, the film is a huge win for Latino representation in Hollywood and superhero cinema.
However, Blue Beetle fans might be in for a treat. Speaking about the character’s future, director Angel Manuel Soto talked about his conversation with James Gunn regarding Jaime Reyes making an appearance in an upcoming DCU show: Booster Gold.
How are Blue Beetle and Booster Gold related?
Ted Kord and Michael Carter have a storied history in the panels of Detective Comics, both have been members of the Justice League, serving long and eventful tenures. Serving their respective tenures under the Martian Manhunter, the duo is known for their comedic escapades, especially their ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes.
With Ted Kord being revealed at the end of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold slated to get his series in the near future once the DCU officially launches with Superman: Legacy in 2025, it is only a matter of time before the two heroes cross paths, giving way to their iconic friendship to shine on the silver screen.
When asked about the future of the character, director Angel Manuel Soto, in an interview with Screen Rant, said:
“Yeah, we have had conversations about it and that’s where he mentioned to me about the Booster Gold TV show that is coming up. Now, where does it fit, how is it gonna play out? We haven’t talked about that.”
Will Xolo Maridueña be returning to James Gunn’s DCU?
While Blue Beetle is the first superhero to be launched under the new management over at WB’s DC arm, does not automatically guarantee it a place in James Gunn’s DCU. For example, the upcoming sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, will also be released under the supervision of Gunn, but will not be a part of the new and rebooted DCU, headed by Gunn.
While the initial plan for the Blue Beetle movie was to be a part of WB’s original DCEU, the plans have since shifted to include the character in Gunn’s new and improved DC shared universe slate. Xolo Maridueña will be reprising his role as the character, while the project will acknowledge the events of the movie as canon.
