Ever since James Gunn took the complete hang of the DC universe, fans had been contemplating what the new reboot of the franchise would look like, especially after the leave of the beloved actors from the SnyderVerse. And then Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle came into view, many thought the reboot wouldn’t be so bad after all.

A little after the release of the film and the somewhat mixed reviews received, James Gunn now seems to not want to let go of Maridueña at all following his statement confirming that he will continue to reprise his role in the upcoming DCU reboot. And now, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto, too, has hinted at a possible sequel for Maridueña’s recent DC film.

Recently appearing in an interview with CinemaBlend, director Angel Manuel Soto commented on Xolo Maridueña’s future in the DC universe considering the upcoming reboot.

“You know, Xolo [Maridueña’s] is a star. I knew it from the beginning. Everybody jumped into it, and he stepped up to the plate, and he led the film,” Soto explained. “He has so much heart and, and the fact that all of that charisma, all of that personality, all of that backstory that forms the Reyes (family) … because this film very well could be a prologue, or a first act, to this character.”

Judging from his statement, it seems that not only will Maridueña reprise his role in the new DC universe, but fans might also get a possible sequel for Blue Beetle in the near future. Continuing, Angel Manuel Soto said:

“The fact that all of those elements that form a character are canon because he is now part of the universe, just shows that speaking from the heart matters. And being true to himself matters. And the fact that he has a future – and the way he interacts, and his personality – has a future in the coming universe. It’s a vote of confidence in general. But at the same time, like, ‘Of course, Xolo. You’re a star.'”

Although the mixed reviews for Xolo Maridueña‘s film have made it clear that it wasn’t exactly what fans were expecting, perhaps, a sequel for it will manage to surpass fans’ expectations. That can only be found out after the 2024 DCU reboot takes place.

Taking to Threads three weeks ago, James Gunn confirmed that Xolo Maridueña will continue to reprise his character even in the upcoming DCU reboot.

“Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller and John Cena will Peacemaker.”

However, he also mentioned how “nothing is canon” until Creature Commandos, which will be premiering on Max in 2024.

“Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year – a sort of aperitif to the DCU – & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think [it’s] okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”

Furthermore, the co-CEO of DC also hinted at a possibly different future for Blue Beetle in the new DC universe.

“And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”

As of now, everything is uncertain, so fans will just have to wait until next year to finally figure out how James Gunn‘s DC reboot turns out for the franchise.
