During an interview with Yahoo, the Miami Vice actor expressed his gratitude to work alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood. He stated how Michael Mann, the director of the film shamed him for doing his “thing” to impress Tom Cruise.

“So I’m in the cab, ACTING. And Michael [Mann] says, ‘What are you doing?’ And I said, ‘I gotta do my thing. You know who’s in the backseat [Tom Cruise], and I gotta do my thing!’ He says, ‘How about you not do your thing?’”

Jamie Foxx stated that Mann offered him valuable advice that has helped him to develop as an actor. Filmmakers have different ideologies, and Mann believed that an actor must be authentic, hence he tells his cast not to exhibit typical “actor” behavior and be true to the role.

“That was a moment of learning. He was telling me, in other words, to shed whatever I’d obtained up to that point. Celebrity, this and that — you gotta shed it, in order for you to get to it. Otherwise, you’re in trouble. I learned that and, even today, use that as a tool, or a discipline, to get to the characters.”

Mann’s advice was simple yet immensely important. As a result, Foxx was praised by the fans and critics because his portrayal was outstanding and as the film progressed he showcased a wide range of emotions, elevating the tension in the movie.
